Transition of weak wave turbulence to wave turbulence with intermittent collapses

Benno Rumpf and Thomas Y. Sheffield

Phys. Rev. E 92, 022927 (2015) - Published 28 August, 2015

Weak wave turbulence is a nonequilibrium state of interacting waves, such as surface waves on water, that is maintained by a driving force and damping, and where wave amplitudes are small. In a one-dimensional model the authors identify an instability that marks the transition from weak wave turbulence to a regime that in addition exhibits the sudden appearance of isolated peaks with large amplitudes, similar to rogue waves, as the driving force is increased.

Saturation of the turbulent dynamo

J. Schober, D. R. G. Schleicher, C. Federrath, S. Bovino, and R. S. Klessen

Phys. Rev. E 92, 023010 (2015) - Published 6 August, 2015

The distribution of energy between hydrodynamic modes and magnetic modes in turbulent dynamos is a fundamental problem in dynamo theory. The authors develop a phenomenological model that allows them to estimate the saturation level and the fraction of kinetic energy that is converted into magnetic energy. Semianalytical estimates from the model compare favorably with numerical estimates from the literature.

Phys.
