Physical processes causing the formation of penitentes

P. Claudin, H. Jarry, G. Vignoles, M. Plapp, and B. Andreotti

Phys. Rev. E 92, 033015 (2015) - Published 25 September, 2015

Penitentes are thin pinnacles of snow or ice that appear at high altitudes, naturally arranged in closely spaced formations and oriented in the general direction of the sun. The authors focus on the initial stages of their growth by performing a linear stability analysis and show, in their detailed analysis, that as sunlight sublimates the ice, the mixing of vapor above the ice surface controls the typical size of the penitentes.

Self-assembly and plasticity of synaptic domains through a reaction-diffusion mechanism

Christoph A. Haselwandter, Mehran Kardar, Antoine Triller, and Rava Azeredo da Silveira

Phys. Rev. E 92, 032705 (2015) - Published 3 September, 2015

One of the longstanding questions in neuroscience is the contrast between the stability of synaptic receptor domains and the rapid diffusion of their constituent molecules. The authors attempt to model this using a simple reaction-diffusion scheme, combining the different time response of receptors and protein scaffolds. Their results suggest an explanation as to how interactions between receptors and proteins can give rise to the stable domains that are observed in neurons.

Modes of competition and the fitness of evolved populations

Tim Rogers and Alan J. McKane

Phys. Rev. E 92, 032708 (2015) - Published 14 September, 2015

In this work the authors analyze a model evolution of species. They find that direct competition for survival between individuals (e.g., predation, cannibalism) leads to a number of species that coexist in a stable state of optimal fitness. When individuals compete indirectly, by consumption of a common resource, the model surprisingly results in a set of species that occupy locations of near minimal fitness.

Noise in coevolving networks

Marina Diakonova, Víctor M. Eguíluz, and Maxi San Miguel

Phys. Rev. E 92, 032803 (2015) - Published 8 September, 2015

This work investigates the role of noise in the coevolutionary voter model. Using simulations and analytical approximations, the authors find that noise, depending on its type, may have significant implications for the behavior of the absorbing and fragmentation transitions.

Shapes of sedimenting soft elastic capsules in a viscous fluid

Horst-Holger Boltz and Jan Kierfeld

Phys. Rev. E 92, 033003 (2015) - Published 4 September, 2015

The authors present an iterative method to determine stationary shapes of soft elastic axisymmetric capsules sedimenting in a viscous fluid. For physically relevant parameters characterizing elastic properties and driving force, they find three possible types of shapes–pseudospherical, pear-shaped, and buckled.

Phys.
