Transition from hydrodynamic to viscoelastic propagation of sound in molten RbBr

F. Demmel, D. Szubrin, W. C. Pilgrim, A. De Francesco, and F. Formisano

Phys. Rev. E 92, 012307 (2015) - Published 9 July, 2015

High-resolution measurements of small-angle inelastic neutron scattering were made on molten RbBr. The authors analyzed the wavelength dependence of the scattering and determined the position of the transition from viscoelastic to hydrodynamic behavior of the liquid.

Soft-core particles freezing to form a quasicrystal and a crystal-liquid phase

A. J. Archer, A. M. Rucklidge, and E. Knobloch

Phys. Rev. E 92, 012324 (2015) - Published 29 July, 2015

The authors study the structure of a system of soft particles in two dimensions. Using density functional theory and Brownian dynamics simulations, they show the existence of a phase in which some particles are localized on lattice sites while others are mobile, and of a metastable quasicrystalline phase with twelvefold symmetry.

Facilitated diffusion of proteins through crumpled fractal DNA globules

Jan Smrek and Alexander Y. Grosberg

Phys. Rev. E 92, 012702 (2015) - Published 1 July, 2015

The authors study how conformation properties of globular DNA affect facilitated diffusion of proteins targeting DNA. They find that crumpled globules promote faster diffusion than conformations with smooth surfaces.

Lattice mechanics of origami tessellations

Arthur A. Evans, Jesse L. Silverberg, and Christian D. Santangelo

Phys. Rev. E 92, 013205 (2015) - Published 27 July, 2015

Origami-based design offers a promising technique to develop materials whose mechanical properties can be tuned by crease patterns introduced to thin sheets. This work proposes a general framework for analyzing the mechanics of origami tessellations as a crystalline material by connecting geometry to more conventional analysis of elasticity in solid-state structures.
