Kinetics-Driven Superconducting Gap in Underdoped Cuprate Superconductors Within the Strong-Coupling Limit

Yucel Yildirim and Wei Ku (顧威)

Phys. Rev. X 1, 011011 (2011) - Published 15 September, 2011

For underdoped cuprate superconductors, the standard Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory for conventional superconductors apparently breaks down. The origin of their superconducting gaps has been a long-standing puzzle. Two theorists from the Brookhaven National Lab put forward an intriguing new theory to explain the puzzle.

Field-Induced Quantum Critical Point and Nodal Superconductivity in the Heavy-Fermion Superconductor Ce2PdIn8

J. K. Dong, H. Zhang, X. Qiu, B. Y. Pan, Y. F. Dai, T. Y. Guan, S. Y. Zhou, D. Gnida, D. Kaczorowski, and S. Y. Li

Phys. Rev. X 1, 011010 (2011) - Published 15 September, 2011

Complex competition between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism marks heavy-fermion superconductors. This experimental paper by a Chinese-Polish collaboration suggests that a lot more can be learned about the competition by exploring the recently discovered Ce2PdIn8.

Robustness of s-Wave Pairing in Electron-Overdoped A1yFe2xSe2 (A=K,Cs)

Chen Fang, Yang-Le Wu, Ronny Thomale, B. Andrei Bernevig, and Jiangping Hu

Phys. Rev. X 1, 011009 (2011) - Published 15 September, 2011

What mechanisms underlie the electron pairing responsible for the high-temperature superconductivity of iron-based superconductors? A group of theorists from Purdue, Princeton and China explore one proposed mechanism that is gaining traction and elucidate its concrete consequences for the superconducting order parameter.

New nanowire-based electronic diodes are fabricated and shown to have ultrafast operating speeds and controllability.

Quantum Entanglement of a Tunneling Spin with Mechanical Modes of a Torsional Resonator

D. A. Garanin and E. M. Chudnovsky

Phys. Rev. X 1, 011005 (2011) - Published 8 August, 2011

A nanomagnet coupled to a mechanical rotational oscillator is predicted to quantum mechanically flip its magnetic poles in resonance with the oscillator. Their “choreographed dance” together can be detected experimentally.
