This work develops an approach to analyze the quantum entanglement of mixed states by comparing the relative magnitudes of populations and coherences of the density operator. This is applied to models of light-matter interaction to examine how the symmetries of the interaction influence entanglement in thermal and nonequilibrium steady states.
