In crystal growth through vapor deposition, impurities play a crucial role. Using colloidal vapor deposition, the authors explore a scenario with an impurity that is identical to the depositing particles but fixed in position, differing solely in mobility. Through experiments and modeling they find that such impurities inhibit aggregation by limiting rearrangement possibilities, and that entropic effects are dominant.

Out-of-equilibrium critical dynamics of the three-dimensional Z2 gauge model along critical relaxational flows

The Z2 gauge model on a three-dimensional lattice undergoes a continuous phase transition. Because of a duality relation with the Ising model, its static critical properties are well known. The authors show that this analogy between the critical properties of the two models does not extend to the critical dynamics, and they calculate a dynamic critical exponent for the Z2 gauge model within an out-of-equilibrium finite-size scaling framework.

Critical exponents for isotropically directed percolation on hierarchical lattices

Percolation problems represent interesting paradigms for phase transitions. Whereas standard percolation illustrates critical phenomena at equilibrium, directed percolation defines a relevant universality class for nonequilibrium transitions. The authors use renormalization-group calculations to investigate isotropically directed percolation on hierarchical lattices. They describe a general renormalization-group approach to determine exactly the critical exponents for those lattices, in particular, for a small-word hierarchical lattice that includes long-range bonds and displays a form of “explosive” percolation.

Replicators in Game-of-Life-like automata

This manuscript presents 3-Life, an extension of the Game of Life which considers three states, two alive and one dead. The authors find robust complex behaviors, such as emerging self-replication patterns, at smaller spatial and temporal scales than in the two-state Game of Life. Anticorrelation between excitations and locally favored structures in glass-forming systems

In the context of glass transition theories, this study explores the spatial relationship between dynamic excitations – microscopic entities central to dynamic facilitation theory – and locally favored structures, geometric motifs linked with the vitrification process, prominent in the frustration theory of the glass transition. By both advanced simulations and colloid experiments, the authors find a significant spatial separation between excitations and locally favored structures at deeper supercooling. This result offers new insights into the role of structural motifs in the relaxation dynamics of supercooled liquids and suggests a novel interaction between different theoretical descriptions of the glass transition.

In the context of glass transition theories, this study explores the spatial relationship between dynamic excitations – microscopic entities central to dynamic facilitation theory – and locally favored structures, geometric motifs linked with the vitrification process, prominent in the frustration theory of the glass transition. By both advanced simulations and colloid experiments, the authors find a significant spatial separation between excitations and locally favored structures at deeper supercooling. This result offers new insights into the role of structural motifs in the relaxation dynamics of supercooled liquids and suggests a novel interaction between different theoretical descriptions of the glass transition.
