Draining the swampland

Ido Ben-Dayan

Phys. Rev. D 99, 101301(R) (2019) - Published 15 May, 2019

Recent conjectures to distinguish theories in the swampland (the space of all low energy effective theories), which have a string theory and thus quantum gravity origin (completion) imply strict conditions for inflation models, ruling out all together many of them. The author shows how classes of logarithmic potentials, as they occur in certain string-constructions, can resolve those tensions.

Bose-Fermi cancellations without supersymmetry

Aleksey Cherman, Mikhail Shifman, and Mithat Ünsal

Phys. Rev. D 99, 105001 (2019) - Published 7 May, 2019

An observed Bose-Fermi cancellation in the large N limit of non-supersymmetric QCD with several families of fermions in the adjoint representation, resulting in an exponentially small and positive vacuum energy, is investigated. For the generic volume dependence and exponential Hagedorn-growth in the respective densities of states to cancel, several aspects (confinement, unbroken discrete symmetry) have to conspire. However, the details remain mysterious and the authors speculate about the existence of a dual non-supersymmetric string theory.

Effective field theory of force-free electrodynamics

Samuel E. Gralla and Nabil Iqbal

Phys. Rev. D 99, 105004 (2019) - Published 14 May, 2019

Force free electrodynamics (FFE) describes magnetically dominated plasmas, expected in the vicinity of pulsars and active black holes. However, FFE cannot explain the observational signatures of coherent radio emission and jets and winds. This paper develops an effective field theory which yields FFE as the leading term in a derivative expansion, with the prospect of the next orders yielding electric fields that would help shed light on the observational signatures mentioned above.

Bose-Fermi cancellations without supersymmetry

Phys.
