Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at non-zero temperature and density is a vastly complex and rich system, and mapping out its phase structure has consequences for physics at scales from the collisions of heavy ions to the interior of neutron stars. The authors extend a mean-field approximation to thermal QCD by including explicit interactions that break chiral symmetry, demonstrating improved agreement with comparable calculations on the lattice.
