Black-hole microstate spectroscopy: Ringdown, quasinormal modes, and echoes

Taishi Ikeda, Massimo Bianchi, Dario Consoli, Alfredo Grillo, Josè Francisco Morales, Paolo Pani, and Guilherme Raposo

Phys. Rev. D 104, 066021 (2021) - Published 16 September, 2021

Simulations reveal the gravitational-wave signal of string theory’s “fuzzy” black holes, a signature that researchers could potentially measure.

Can small-scale baryon inhomogeneities resolve the Hubble tension? An investigation with ACT DR4

Leander Thiele, Yilun Guan, J. Colin Hill, Arthur Kosowsky, and David N. Spergel

Phys. Rev. D 104, 063535 (2021) - Published 21 September, 2021

The authors analyze an appealing attempt to resolve the Hubble tension that modifies the physics around the time of recombination by small-scale baryon density inhomogeneities (e.g. by primordial magnetic fields). Using the most recent data of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), they find that baryon clumping on the CMB is severely constrained such that this mechanism most likely does not solve the Hubble tension. However, a time-dependent version of that scenario could evade these strong constraints.

Geometric free field realization for the genus-two class S theory of type a1

Christopher Beem and Carlo Meneghelli

Phys. Rev. D 104, 065015 (2021) - Published 21 September, 2021

The authors study in detail an algebraic structure (vertex operator algebra VOA) that exists in N=2 superconformal field theories in four dimensions. Focusing on a particular class of these theories and employing the method of free-field realization of the VOA, which the authors developed previously, they discover a surprising large symmetry that facilitates a simple organization of a very complicated structure derived previously by more conventional methods.
