Badreddine Assouar, Chief Editor

Badreddine Assouar is a Research Director at CNRS and the University of Lorraine. He received his PhD in Materials Physics from Nancy University (France) in 2001. In 2002, he became a Research Scientist at CNRS. He obtained his habilitation to supervise research (HDR) in 2007 and became a Research Professor. In 2010, he joined the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta as a Visiting Professor. Since 2013, he has founded and led the Acoustic Metamaterials and Phononics group at the University of Lorraine, where he conducts research on acoustic and elastic metamaterials, metasurfaces, phononics, and wave physics.

Over the past 15 years, he has served on numerous technical program committees of international conferences and has organized many international conferences and workshops. Badreddine was elected a Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences in 2024 and has been a valued member of the APS community as an Associate Editor for Physical Review Applied since 2019.

Boyana Konforti is a Ph.D. scientist and strategic leader focused on advancing open science and expanding equitable access to scientific knowledge. Before joining APS, she served as Director of Strategic Initiatives at Taylor & Francis/F1000, championing the “publish, then review” model and building partnerships to promote transparent, inclusive scientific communication.

She previously held leadership positions at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Simons Foundation, where she founded and directed the Education & Outreach program and launched Science Sandbox. Her editorial career includes launching Cell Reports, the first OA journal at Cell Press, and serving as Chief Editor of Nature Structural & Molecular Biology. She co-authored the textbook The Molecules of Life. She holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University and completed postdoctoral work at Rockefeller University and Columbia University.

Cosmo Lupo received his Ph.D. in fundamental and applied physics from the University of Napoli "Federico II" in 2007. He conducted post-doctoral research at the Slovak Academy of Science, the University of Camerino, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Universities of York and Sheffield. He joined the Polytechnic University of Bari in 2021 as Associate Professor of theoretical physics.

His main research interests are in quantum information theory and its applications in communication, sensing, and computing.

Kohei Nakajima, Associate Editor

Kohei Nakajima is an Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo. He earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Tokyo in 2004, 2006, and 2009. After completing his doctorate, he spent five years as a postdoctoral fellow, including time as a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow for Research Abroad at the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich.

From 2013 to 2017, he was an Assistant Professor at the Hakubi Center for Advanced Research at Kyoto University. His research interests include nonlinear dynamical systems, chaos theory, information theory, reservoir computing, physical reservoir computing, physical neural networks, and neuromorphic devices.

Claudia Ratti currently holds a tenured MD Anderson chaired professorship at the University of Houston. She authored more than one hundred publications in peer-reviewed international journals. She was awarded the ‘2011 International Zonta Prize’, the ‘2012 Prize “Giuseppe Borgia”’ granted by the Italian Academy of Science, and the NSF Career Award in 2017. She is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. Her research is focused on the study of strongly interacting matter under extreme conditions of temperature and density.

Luiz F. Zagonel is a physicist and professor at the University of Campinas in Brazil. His research focuses on advanced microscopy and spectroscopy techniques for studying nanostructured and low-dimensional materials. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Campinas and conducted postdoctoral research in France, working on nanoscale optical and electron spectroscopies.

His current work includes developing instrumentation for scanning tunneling microscopy and studying electronic and luminescent properties of two-dimensional materials and semiconductor nanostructures.

Lara Benfatto

Lara Benfatto

Lara Benfatto is a full professor in theoretical condensed-matter physics at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. She holds a Ph.D. in Physics, and she has been a staff researcher at the Institute of Complex Systems of CNR until 2019, prior to her appointment as university professor. She has been awarded the Ludwig-Genzel Prize “for advancing the theoretical understanding of the dynamical response of interacting electronic systems, in particular superconductors”.

She leads a group working on theoretical aspects connected to the physics of correlated electron systems in low dimensions, including high-temperature cuprate and pnictide superconductors, graphene, dichalcogenides, disordered superconductors, and superconducting heterostructures. In recent years, she has focused particularly on developing a theoretical framework for understanding time-resolved THz spectroscopies of emergent systems, with applications ranging from superconducting collective modes to hybrid light-matter excitations.

Aleksandra B. Djurišić

Aleksandra B. Djurišić obtained a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the School of Electrical Engineering, the University of Belgrade in 1997. After finishing her Ph.D. studies, she worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Hong Kong and as an Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral fellow at TU Dresden. She joined the Department of Physics at the University of Hong Kong in 2003 as assistant professor, where she worked as a professor from 2013 to 2025. In 2025, she joined Institut Ruđer Bošković in Zagreb, Croatia.

Her research interests include halide perovskite materials, nanomaterials, wide-bandgap semiconductors, and organic materials, with applications in photocatalysis, antimicrobial materials, solar cells, and LEDs. She has published 429 research articles in WoS, has over 28,200 citations, and an h-index of 72.

Matt Eichenfield

Matt Eichenfield is a Professor and the Gustafson Endowed Chair in Quantum Engineering the Department of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder; he is also Sandia National Labs’ first Distinguished Faculty Joint Appointee. He received his B.S. in physics from UNLV in 2004 and his Ph.D. in physics from Caltech in 2010, for which his thesis on cavity optomechanics in photonic and phononic crystals won the Demitriades Prize for best Caltech thesis in nanoscience. He became the first Kavli Nanoscience Prize Postdoctoral Fellow at Caltech in 2010 before joining Sandia National Labs as a Harry S. Truman Fellow in 2011, where he founded the MEMS-Enabled Quantum Systems group, which he still leads through his joint appointment. His research spans photonic, phononic, and electronic microsystems in diverse application spaces such as quantum computing, inertial sensing, RF signal processing, and more, focusing on scalability and manufacturability to allow these technologies to be adopted in real-world technologies and applications.

Nicholas X. Fang

Nicholas X. Fang is currently Chair Professor of Photonics Innovation at the University of Hong Kong. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics from Nanjing University, and his Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to joining HKU, he was a full professor with tenure at MIT until 2022.

Professor Fang’s research focuses on nanophotonics and nanofabrication, with particular emphasis on scalable manufacturing processes for wave functional materials. His work on nanoarchitectured metamaterials was highlighted among the Top 10 Emerging Breakthrough Technologies of 2015. His honors include the Brillouin Medal from the International Phononics Society; Fellow of the Society of Engineering Sciences (SES) and OSA Fellow; the ASME Chao and Trigger Young Manufacturing Engineer Award (2013); the ICO Prize from the International Commission of Optics (2011); the NSF CAREER Award (2009); and MIT Technology Review Magazine’s 35 Young Innovators Award (2008).

Axel Hoffmann

Axel Hoffmann received his Diploma in physics from the RWTH Aachen in 1994 and his Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, San Diego in 1999. Subsequently, he worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory as a postdoctoral fellow. In 2001 he joined the Argonne National Laboratory as a staff scientist and became in 2014 the Senior Group Leader of the Magnetic Thin Film Group within the Materials Science Division. In 2019 he joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as a Founder Professor.

His research interests encompass various magnetism topics, including magnetic heterostructures, spin-transport, and magnetization dynamics. He has more than 200 publications, five book chapters, four magnetism-related U.S. patents, and edited two books. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society, American Vacuum Society, and IEEE. His awards include Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Magnetics Society (2011), Outstanding Researcher Award by the Prairie Section of the American Vacuum Society (2015), Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate (2019–2024), the David Adler Lectureship Award in the Field of Materials Physics from the American Physical Society (2022), and the Research Award by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2024).

Ji-Ping Huang

Ji-Ping Huang is a Professor in the Department of Physics at Fudan University and serves as the Dean of the College of Science at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003.

His research focuses on interdisciplinary areas including thermal metamaterials and transformation thermotics—a theory he pioneered—along with diffusion metamaterials, statistical physics, and complex systems.

Cynthia Keppel

Cynthia Keppel has served as Associate Director for Physics and Experimental Hall Leader at the US Department of Energy (DOE) Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Her nuclear physics interests are in electron scattering as a probe of nucleon structure. She is also active in medical technology development, where she holds twelve patents. She was the Scientific and Technical Director of the Hampton University (HU) Proton Cancer Institute. She earned her Ph.D. in 1995 from The American University for work at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. She has numerous awards, including a National Science Foundation CAREER award, the DOE Office of Science Distinguished Scientist Fellowship, the American Physical Society (APS) Forum on Industrial and Applied Physics Distinguished Lectureship Award, and an APS Fellowship. She has also served on numerous national boards, including the National Nuclear Science Advisory Committee and the National Institutes of Health National Advisory Research Resources Council. She is an author of over 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications, 60 of which are ranked as top cited (100+) articles.

Do-Nyun Kim

Do-Nyun Kim is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Seoul National University. He received his Ph.D. in computational mechanics from MIT, after which he worked as a Postdoctoral Associate in MIT’s Department of Biological Engineering.

His research spans structural DNA/RNA nanotechnology, scientific and industrial AI, computational mechanics, and mechanical metamaterial design. He has received numerous research awards, including the Top 100 National R&D Achievement of the Year 2024 and Top 10 Mechanical Technologies of the Year 2024, as well as awards from the Computational Structural Engineering Institute of Korea and the Korea Multiscale Mechanics Society.

Tony Low

Tony Low is the Paul Palmberg Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Minnesota. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National University of Singapore.

His research focuses on the modeling of quantum and nano-materials and their emergent phenomena, targeting ultra-efficient electronic and photonic devices for computing, sensing, and communication. He is a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher and has led major NSF and DoD collaborations. He also directs the Quantum + Chips summer school and runs the Professor Nano YouTube channel, promoting open and collaborative quantum and semiconductor education.

Ruwen Peng

Ruwen Peng is a distinguished professor in the School of Physics at Nanjing University and a principal investigator in the National Laboratory of Solid State Microstructures. She received her Ph.D. in condensed matter physics from Nanjing University in 1998.

She has received major national and international awards including the National Science Foundation of China's Distinguished Young Scholars Award (2006), the Chinese Young Women Scientist Award (2011), and the Xie Xide Award (2013). Her research interests span nanophotonics, metamaterials and metasurfaces, photonic quasicrystals, phononics, and optoelectronics.

Timon Rabczuk

Timon Rabczuk is a Full Professor at the Institute of Structural Mechanics at Bauhaus University Weimar. He received his Dr.-Ing. from the University of Karlsruhe (now KIT) and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Computational Mechanics group at Northwestern University. He later worked as a senior lecturer at TU Munich and has served at the University of Christchurch in New Zealand.

His research focuses on developing models and computational methods for challenging engineering and materials-science problems involving multiple fields, multiple scales, adaptivity, large deformations, plasticity, and damage leading up to failure. He is a member of the National Academy of Artificial Intelligence, the European Academy of Sciences, and the Academy of Europe.

Tomohiko Saitoh

Tomohiko Saitoh is a professor in the Department of Applied Physics at the Tokyo University of Science in Japan, where he also served as department head from 2014 to 2016. He earned his Ph.D. in condensed matter physics from the University of Tokyo in 1996. He has received several honors and awards, including recognition as an Outstanding Referee of APS in 2014.

He has extensive experience in photoelectron spectroscopy and first-principles band-structure calculations. His research interests include the electronic structure and magnetism of solid-state compounds, particularly 3d transition-metal oxides and transparent conductive oxides.

Ying Wu is a Professor and Chair of the Applied Mathematics and Computational Science (AMCS) Program at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). She received her B.S. degree from Nanjing University in 2002 and her Ph.D. from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2008. Her research focuses on the theoretical and numerical modeling of metamaterials, with expertise spanning homogenization theory, coupled-mode theory, perturbation methods, and multiple-scattering techniques. She was the recipient of the 2017 Young Investigator Award from the International Phononics Society.
