Snapshot of a 15-solar-mass supernova explosion 1 second after shock formation, from a 2-dimensional model. The newly formed neutron star has been accelerated to a recoil velocity of 520 km/s by the asymmetry of the ejected mass, which grew from small random fluctuations as a result of hydrodynamic instabilities.
