Dr. Fernandes is a professor of physics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he has been since 2024. Before that, he was a Distinguished McKnight University Professor at the University of Minnesota. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Campinas, Brazil, in 2008 and held postdoctoral appointments at the Ames National Laboratory/Iowa State University and Columbia University/Los Alamos National Laboratory. Dr. Fernandes is a condensed matter theorist interested in the collective behavior of interacting electrons in quantum materials, focusing on phenomena such as superconductivity, electronic liquid crystals, and unconventional magnetism. He is an APS Fellow, a Cottrell Scholar, and a Mercator Fellow.

Following his postdoctoral research at Columbia University and a brief period in the telecom industry, where he worked on optical switching via micro-electromechanical systems, he returned to Columbia as a research scientist. He later moved to the University of British Columbia, where he now serves as a senior research scientist. His research focuses on the electronic structure and optical properties of 2D materials, surfaces, and strongly correlated systems, as well as nonlinear optics, integrated photonics, and ultrafast phenomena. He served as an Associate Editor for Optics Express from 2011 to 2015 and is currently an Associate Editor for Physical Review B (since 2015) and Physical Review Letters (since 2024). |

In 2017 he moved to ETH Zurich, Switzerland, where he was a postdoctoral ETH Fellow at the Institute for Theoretical Physics. In 2019 he joined Aalto University, in Finland, as a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor at the Department of Applied Physics, where he leads the Correlated Quantum Materials group. Shirley LiUniversity of California, Irvine, USA Shirley obtained her PhD from the Ohio State University in 2017. She was a postdoctoral researcher at SLAC National Lab between 2017–2020 and at Fermilab between 2020–2022. She joined the UC Irvine Physics Department in the summer of 2022. Shirley’s research goal is to understand how elementary particles behave, what their masses are, how they interact, etc. Her recent research focuses on neutrinos, one of the least understood elementary particles. Much of her recent work has been exploring what we can learn about neutrinos and physics beyond the Standard Model from current and future experiments. |

Katelin SchutzMcGill University, Canada Katelin is an assistant professor at McGill University, where she holds the Canada Research Chair in Astrophysics Beyond the Standard Model. Her interests are at the intersection of astrophysics, particle physics and cosmology, particularly in understanding the composition and behavior of dark matter and other extensions of the Standard Model.
