On the Cover

The image shows a microphotograph of a lithium sample (at 6 o'clock) inside a 0.25-mm diameter hole drilled into a gold-plated rhenium gasket. In the experiment the hole is flooded with liquid helium and compressed up to 670,000 atmospheres by diamond anvils. The Li becomes superconducting at pressures greater than 200,000 atm for temperatures in the range of 5-14 K.
