Visualization of the electron density at an aluminum-oxide surface, from density-functional calculations. These calculations predict that the surface Al atoms will form a 1D electron gas that remains metallic down to a lower temperature ( < 1 K) than other existing 1DEG systems. The large gray balls are O atoms; the small green ones are Al atoms.
