Schematic diagram of dip-pen nanolithography. In this process, an atomic-force microscope tip is used to deposit organic molecules ("ink") directly onto a specific nanoscale region. A new study shows that weakly bound ink molecules diffuse over the surface and reorganize into fractal-like patterns.
