Demonstrations of the "classical" (top row) and the "reverse" (bottom row) Brazil-nut effect. Granular media consisting of large and small particles tend to demix upon vertical shaking; the large particles can either rise to the top or sink to the bottom, depending upon their size and density relative to the small particles.
