Frequency resolved optical gating (FROG) traces of a probe laser pulse under different experimental conditions; the time delay between the pump & the probe pulses is along the vertical axis. The FROG technique is used here to investigate a new method of pulse shortening, molecular phase modulation, which, by controlling the pulse phase, frequency & chirp, can generate laser pulses less than 4 femtoseconds in duration.
