The fast, irregular, fluctuations of the state of polarization of light output from an erbium doper fiber ring laser are used to communicate digital information. The experiments illustrate the application of a dynamical encoding and information recovery scheme that is robust to perturbations of the communication channel, a standard single mode fiber. A fiber-optic polarization analyzer was used to measure and visualize the polarization dynamics at nanosecond time scales on the Poincaré sphere.

In atom lithography with optical masks, deposition of an atomic beam on a given substrate is controlled by a standing light-wave field. The lateral intensity distribution of the light field is transferred to the substrate with nanometer scale. We have tailored a complex pattern of this intensity distribution through diffraction of a laser beam from a hologram that is stored in a photorefractive crystal. This method can be extended to superpose 1000 or more laser beams. The method is furthermore applicable during growth processes and thus allows full 3D structuring of suitable materials with periodic and nonperiodic patterns at nanometer scales.

Electromagnetic bursts of substantial energy on a nuclear time scale of ${10}^{-21\mathrm{}}–{10}^{-22\mathrm{}}\mathrm{s}$ [zeptosecond (zs) to sub-zs] can theoretically be generated by a perawatt or multiterawatt laser beam focused on a subwavelength-size solid particle or thin wire. Terawatt laser in a similar setup could be instrumental in reaching the subattosecond domain. The system may also generate a half-cycle pulse magnetic field on astrophysical scale up to $\sim {10}^6\mathrm{T}$.

Crumpled sheets have a surprisingly large resistance to further compression. We have studied the crumpling of thin sheets of Mylar under different loading conditions. When placed under a fixed compressive force, the size of a crumpled material decreases logarithmically in time for periods up to three weeks. We also find hysteretic behavior when measuring the compression as a function of applied force. By using a pretreating protocol, we control this hysteresis and find reproducible scaling behavior for the size of the crumpled material as a function of the applied force.

A method, by which periodic two-dimensional arrays of identical metal clusters of nanometer size and spacing could be spontaneously obtained by taking advantage of surface mediated clustering, is reported. The versatility of the method is demonstrated for a broad range of metals on $\mathrm{Si}\left(111\right)-(7\times 7)$ substrates. In situ scanning tunneling microscopy analysis of In clusters, combined with first-principles total energy calculations, unveils unique initial-stage atomic structures of the surface-supported clusters and the vital steps that lead to the success of this method. A strong interaction between the clusters and the surface holds the key to the observed cluster sizes.

The retraction energy of a multiwalled carbon nanotube with an extruded core causes the core to oscillate with respect to its fully retracted position where the van der Waals potential energy is minimized. This phenomenon, together with the available nanotechnology, leads to the creation of nanomechanical systems of operating frequency up to several gigahertz.

Ultrahigh energy cosmic rays create black holes in scenarios with extra dimensions and TeV-scale gravity. In particular, cosmic neutrinos will produce black holes deep in the atmosphere, initiating quasihorizontal showers far above the standard model rate. At the Auger Observatory, hundreds of black hole events may be observed, providing evidence for extra dimensions and the first opportunity for experimental study of microscopic black holes. If no black holes are found, the fundamental Planck scale must be above 2 TeV for any number of extra dimensions.

We report the observation of 3D linear or branched chains of polymer-blend microspheres generated from liquid droplets of solution where the modified surface structure of the polymer composite results in highly robust interparticle bonds. Using a linear quadrupole to precisely position particles in space, we are able to take advantage of this novel material property to actively assemble particles in programmable three-dimensional architectures. The robust interlocking nature of interparticle linkage gives rise to strongly coupled morphology-dependent resonances in bisphere and trisphere systems, suggesting the possibility of three-dimensional photonic “molecules” and microscale optical manipulation applications.

Transverse momentum spectra for charged hadrons and for neutral pions in the range $1\mathrm{GeV}/c<\mathrm{}{p}_T<5\mathrm{}\mathrm{GeV}/c$ have been measured by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC in $\mathrm{Au}+\mathrm{Au}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=130\mathrm{}\mathrm{GeV}$. At high $p_T$ the spectra from peripheral nuclear collisions are consistent with scaling the spectra from $p+p$ collisions by the average number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The spectra from central collisions are significantly suppressed when compared to the binary-scaled $p+p$ expectation, and also when compared to similarly binary-scaled peripheral collisions, indicating a novel nuclear-medium effect in central nuclear collisions at RHIC energies.

We have found an oscillating instability of fast-running cracks in thin rubber sheets. A well defined transition from straight to wavy cracks occurs as the amount of biaxial strain increases. Measurements of the amplitude and wavelength of the oscillation near the onset of this instability indicate that the instability is a Hopf bifurcation.

The hard sphere disorder-order transition serves as the paradigm for crystallization. However, measurements of the crystallization kinetics for colloidal hard spheres in the coexistence regime are incomplete for early times and are affected by sedimentation. We use time resolved Bragg light scattering to characterize crystal nucleation and growth in a microgravity environment on the space shuttle. In contrast to the classical picture of the nucleation and growth of isolated crystallites, we find substantial coarsening of growing crystallites. We also observe dendritic growth and face-centered cubic as the stable structure.

Here we report a simple microfluidics phenomenon which allows the efficient mass production of micron size gas bubbles with a perfectly monodisperse and controllable diameter. It resorts on a self-excited breakup phenomenon (which locks at a certain frequency) of a short gas microligament coflowing in a focused liquid stream. In this work, we describe the physics of the phenomenon and obtain closed expressions for the bubble diameter as a function of the liquid and gas properties, geometry, and flow parameters, from a large set of experimental results.

Using x-ray absorption spectromicroscopy we have imaged the uncompensated spins induced at the surface of antiferromagnetic (AFM) NiO(100) by deposition of ferromagnetic (FM) Co. These spins align parallel to the AFM spins in NiO(100) and align the FM spins in Co. The uncompensated interfacial spins arise from an ultrathin ${\mathrm{CoNiO}}_x$ layer that is formed upon Co deposition through reduction of the NiO surface. The interfacial Ni spins are discussed in terms of the “uncompensated spins” at AFM/FM interfaces long held responsible for coercivity increases and exchange bias. We find a direct correlation between their number and the size of the coercivity.

Quantum computation holds promise for the solution of many intractable problems. However, since many quantum algorithms are stochastic in nature they can find the solution of hard problems only probabilistically. Thus the efficiency of the algorithms has to be characterized by both the expected time to completion and the associated variance. In order to minimize both the running time and its uncertainty, we show that portfolios of quantum algorithms analogous to those of finance can outperform single algorithms when applied to the $\mathrm{NP}$-complete problems such as 3-satisfiability.

The observation of plasma focusing of a 28.5 GeV positron beam is reported. The plasma was formed by ionizing a nitrogen jet only 3 mm thick. Simultaneous focusing in both transverse dimensions was observed with effective focusing strengths of order tesla per micron. The minimum area of the beam spot was reduced by a factor of $2.0\pm 0.3$ by the plasma. The longitudinal beam envelope was measured and compared with numerical calculations.

We have performed the most realistic simulation to date of the operation of a scanning tunneling microscope. Probe-sample distances from beyond tunneling to actual surface contact are covered. We simultaneously calculate forces, atomic displacements, and tunneling currents, allowing quantitative comparison with experimental values. A distance regime below which the probe becomes unstable is identified. It is shown that the real distance differs substantially from previous estimates because of large atomic displacements on the surface and at the probe tip.

We report a new fullerenelike material consisting of cross-linked nano-onions of C and N. Growth of the onion shells takes place atom by atom on a substrate surface and yields thin solid films during magnetron sputter deposition. Electron microscopy and energy loss spectroscopy show that the core shell contains up to $20\mathrm{at}.\mathrm{}\%$ N corresponding to ${\mathrm{C}}_{48}{\mathrm{N}}_{12}$ aza-fullerene composition. Nanoindentation of this nanostructured material gives high resilience with hardness 7 GPa, Young's modulus 37 GPa, and complete elastic recovery after loading with 0.5 mN to a depth of 75 nm. Total energy calculations show the stability of ${\mathrm{C}}_{60-2n}{\mathrm{N}}_{2n}$ aza-fullerenes and suggest the existence of a novel ${\mathrm{C}}_{48}{\mathrm{N}}_{12}$ molecule.

In this Letter, we present a new method for simulating quantum processes in the context of classical molecular dynamics simulations. The approach is based on solving numerically the quantum Liouville equation in the Wigner representation using ensembles of classical trajectories. Quantum effects arise in this formulation as a breakdown of the statistical independence of the ensemble. New interaction forces between ensemble members are derived, which require the trajectory ensemble representing the state to evolve as an entangled, unified whole. The method is applied to the simulation of quantum tunneling in a one-dimensional model system, yielding excellent agreement with exact quantum calculations.

We report self-guided propagation of ultrashort IR laser pulses in fused silica over several Rayleigh lengths. Self-guiding is accompanied by pulse splitting and time compression. Numerical simulations involving pulse self-focusing, temporal dispersion, and multiphoton ionization are found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. They show that a quasidynamic equilibrium between multiphoton ionization and self-focusing drives the filamentation process, while temporal dispersion plays a negligible role.

The Casimir force between uncharged metallic surfaces originates from quantum-mechanical zero-point fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. We demonstrate that this quantum electrodynamical effect has a profound influence on the oscillatory behavior of microstructures when surfaces are in close proximity $\left(\le 100\mathrm{nm}\right)$. Frequency shifts, hysteretic behavior, and bistability caused by the Casimir force are observed in the frequency response of a periodically driven micromachined torsional oscillator.
