This work studies the effective force induced by thermal fluctuations between boundaries (the thermodynamic Casimir force) for a vector model in a slab geometry. The authors find a mapping to a one-dimensional Schrödinger equation in a certain limit that allows an accurate determination of two scaling functions. The results are consistent with experiments on He wetting films and simulations of spin models.

The authors introduce a Monte Carlo algorithm to investigate polymers in solution in the collapsed, globular phase. Little is known about the behavior in this phase, and apart from testing the algorithm the authors find evidence that the hyperscaling relation is not satisfied for collapsed globular ring polymers.

It is a challenging problem to image the flow fields of multiphase flows, such as an oil drop rising through water. The authors introduce a scheme for ultrafast MRI velocimetry that avoids artifacts and makes it possible to distinguish the flows in the different phases.
