Gas flow in plant microfluidic networks controlled by capillary valves

M. Capron, Ph. Tordjeman, F. Charru, E. Badel, and H. Cochard

Phys. Rev. E 89, 033019 (2014) - Published 28 March, 2014

The authors use microfluidic experiments and imaging techniques to study the mechanism of air flow in the vascular tissue of plants. They conclude that the air diffusion is controlled by capillary valves which open at a critical pressure, a result that is important both for the understanding of plant physiology and for possible application in biomimetic devices.

Transition in coupled replicas may not imply a finite-temperature ideal glass transition in glass-forming systems

Juan P. Garrahan

Phys. Rev. E 89, 030301(R) (2014) - Published 3 March, 2014

A key open question in the glass-transition field is whether a finite temperature thermodynamic transition to the glass state exists or not. This work shows that, in contrast to recent evidence, an observed transition in coupled replicas does not necessarily indicate a finite-temperature ideal-glass transition in glass-forming systems.

Quantifying the effects of neglecting many-body interactions in coarse-grained models of complex fluids

Douglas J. Ashton and Nigel B. Wilding

Phys. Rev. E 89, 031301(R) (2014) - Published 10 March, 2014

The authors describe a simulation scheme for assessing the consequences of neglecting many-body effects in coarse-grained models of complex fluids. Through a simple method that can directly estimate the virial coefficients of a complex fluid the role of many-body effects can be quantified.

Pros and cons of swimming in a noisy environment

Piero Olla

Phys. Rev. E 89, 032136 (2014) - Published 28 March, 2014

The author studies a simplified model of a microscopic swimmer in a noisy environment. It is shown that the presence of noise can increase the swimmer’s efficiency, and overcome some of the limitations of the scallop theorem, which says that swimming by reciprocal motion is impossible at low Reynolds number.

Coarsening modes of clusters of aggregating particles

Inferring the spatiotemporal DNA replication program from noisy data

A. Baker and J. Bechhoefer

Phys. Rev. E 89, 032703 (2014) - Published 6 March, 2014

Based on a stochastic model of DNA replication this work studies the problem of inferring replication rates from experimental data. Using a Bayesian, nonparametric inference method the authors recover simulated replication schemes from noisy data that are typical of current experiments.
