Abstract

The problem of detecting specific features of microscopic dynamics in the macroscopic behavior of a many-degrees-of-freedom system is investigated by analyzing the position and momentum time series of a heavy impurity embedded in a chain of nearest-neighbor anharmonic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam oscillators. Results obtained in a previous work [M. Romero-Bastida, Phys. Rev. E 69, 056204 (2004)] suggest that the impurity does not contribute significantly to the dynamics of the chain and can be considered as a probe for the dynamics of the system to which the impurity is coupled. The (r,τ) entropy, which measures the amount of information generated by unit time at different scales τ of time and r of the observable, is numerically computed by methods of nonlinear time-series analysis using the position and momentum signals of the heavy impurity for various values of the energy density ϵ (energy per degree of freedom) of the system and some values of the impurity mass M. Results obtained from these two time series are compared and discussed.

  6. Although in Ref. [5] a time-series analysis was performed with the position time record of a heavy impurity coupled to a chain of harmonic oscillators, the time series employed was constructed as a Fourier expansion. Consequently, the analysis is restricted to the harmonic case, whereas the MFPU model allows one to study the anharmonic—i.e., chaotic—case as well, since in our case the position time series for both dynamical regimes is directly computed from the system’s equations of motion.

  10. In a strict sense there is no true Brownian motion for a finite N value. However, for the time intervals in which the diffusion coefficient and the MACF have been computed for this particular model with N=300000, no distinction can be made between the behavior for the finite N value employed and a genuine Brownian motion in the thermodynamic limit [8]. Thus we have avoided the analysis of the finite-size effects on the aforementioned properties, a topic beyond the scope of the present paper, which is certainly an issue for other systems studied with a much smaller number of particles. One such case is the one-dimensional Lennard-Jones system reported in S. Pal, G. Srinivas, S. Bhattacharyya, and B. Bagchi, J. Chem. Phys. 116, 5941 (2002).
