Improved search for heavy neutrinos in the decay πeν

A. Aguilar-Arevalo, M. Aoki, M. Blecher, D. I. Britton, D. vom Bruch, D. A. Bryman, S. Chen, J. Comfort, S. Cuen-Rochin, L. Doria, P. Gumplinger, A. Hussein, Y. Igarashi, S. Ito, S. Kettell, L. Kurchaninov, L. S. Littenberg, C. Malbrunot, R. E. Mischke, T. Numao, D. Protopopescu, A. Sher, T. Sullivan, and D. Vavilov (PIENU Collaboration)

Phys. Rev. D 97, 072012 (2018) - Published 17 April, 2018

As established conclusively in recent years, standard model neutrinos have mass. Additional heavy neutrino states, such as sterile neutrinos, are required in many models of neutrino masses. PIENU, via a novel use of the positron decay mode of the pion, has set new limits on these massive states.

Impact of fission neutron energies on reactor antineutrino spectra

B. R. Littlejohn, A. Conant, D. A. Dwyer, A. Erickson, I. Gustafson, and K. Hermanek

Phys. Rev. D 97, 073007 (2018) - Published 30 April, 2018

The energy and flux spectrum of anti-neutrinos produced in nuclear reactors deviate from theoretical expectations. The origin of this discrepancy is contested and its significance has remained uncertain. In this study, Littlejohn et al. provide closely argued evidence that one suspected source of the anomaly, the dependence on the energy of the fission-inducing neutron, cannot explain the observed variance.
