Beyond CMB cosmic variance limits on reionization with the polarized Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect

Joel Meyers, P. Daniel Meerburg, Alexander van Engelen, and Nicholas Battaglia

Phys. Rev. D 97, 103505 (2018) - Published 8 May, 2018

The authors map out a high precision strategy to use the yet to be observed polarized SunyaevZeldovich (pSZ) effect (scattering of CMB photons in collapsed galaxies etc.) to reconstruct the cosmological reionization history, the epoch which marks the emergence of the first luminous sources in our Universe. First detection of the pSZeffect is expected to occur with upcoming CMB and galaxy surveys, encouraging further exploration of this observable as a probe of cosmology.

Gravitational self-force on generic bound geodesics in Kerr spacetime

Maarten van de Meent

Phys. Rev. D 97, 104033 (2018) - Published 21 May, 2018

Black hole binary systems with a small mass ratio, can be treated in general relativity via a systematic expansion in the mass ratio around the test-particle geodesic limit of the smaller-mass black hole. Using this so-called “self-force” method, the metric and other quantities can be reconstructed. In this paper, the author computes, for the first time, the first-order self-force correction for generic bound orbits around a Kerr black hole.
