In cold, dense quark matter, chiral symmetry breaking manifests itself through spatially varying condensates, such as pion condensates, chiral spirals, etc. These authors show that since condensation is in one spatial dimension, the would be Goldstone bosons actually generate quasi-condensates, analogous to liquid crystals.
