Absence of TeV halos around millisecond pulsars

A. U. Abeysekara et al. (HAWC Collaboration)

Phys. Rev. D 111, 043014 (2025) - Published 6 February, 2025

Extended gamma-ray emissions in the TeV range are typically associated with middle-aged isolated pulsars. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) collaboration finds negative evidence for the hypothesis that millisecond pulsars (MSPs) also source TeV halos. The authors conclude that while MSPs contribute to gamma-ray emissions in the GeV range, isolated pulsars are the likely primary source of TeV halos and comment on the implications for the Galactic Center gamma-ray excess and the Galactic diffuse emission.

Kontsevich-Segal criterion in the no-boundary state constrains anisotropy

Thomas Hertog, Oliver Janssen, and Joel Karlsson

Phys. Rev. D 111, 046008 (2025) - Published 6 February, 2025

Which saddle points should contribute to the gravitational path integral has been much debated in recent years, besides the puzzling failure of the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary proposal in predicting the overall curvature of the Universe despite successfully determining its fluctuations. Here the authors apply the so-called Kontsevich-Segal-Witten (KSW) criterion for complex metric backgrounds to anisotropic deformations of de Sitter space. They make interesting observations concerning which deformations are allowed saddlepoints and show that the KSW criterion imposes a theoretical prior on large-scale properties of the Universe.

Dark dimension and the grand unification of forces

Jonathan J. Heckman, Cumrun Vafa, Timo Weigand, and Fengjun Xu

Phys. Rev. D 111, 046014 (2025) - Published 10 February, 2025

Application of fundamental principles of quantum gravity (Swampland Program) to dark energy leads to a single large (mesoscopic) extra dimension, denoted Dark Dimension. Assuming a standard grand unification of forces, the authors make several predictions based on swampland conditions and experimental bounds like the proton lifetime: the proton decay mediating boson is a solitonic string stretched in the dark dimension of mass 10151016 GeV, defining an upper GUT scale 1016 GeV; a tower of Kaluza-Klein excitations in the 110 TeV range, a promising candidate for dark matter; a Higgs mass in the correct range. Excitingly, some of these predictions will soon be within experimental reach.
