Abstract

A simple statistical model is set up to compare with the apparently different results of previous calculations on the production of high-energy particles in a heavy nucleus by multiperipheral collisions. The discrepancy is resolved in terms of a high sensitivity of the model to the production number n in a primary collision. This sensitivity is greatly reduced by the realistic assumption of s<1 for the survival of reproductive effectiveness per stage of an intranuclear cascade. Flimsy cosmic-ray data suggest s0.6 in the 100-GeV region.
