Abstract

We quantize the electromagnetic field in a half-space dielectric bounded by conducting planes parallel to the interface. The density of states is obtained for both the propagating and evanescent modes. We show that this density is appropriate for any boundary conditions and hence is applicable to the modes given by Carniglia and Mandel.
