Abstract
It is shown that the use of normalizable states in quantum field theory strongly suggests that scattering processes at high energies may be determined solely by light-cone contributions. Then configuration-space analysis of electromagnetic current commutators and observed behaviors of photoabsorption and of inelastic electron-proton scattering imply that scaling for deep-inelastic electroproduction cannot be related to a diffractive mechanism and that the scaling limit of and is broken when is very small (). It is shown that our results are consistent with the observed scaling behavior, the parton model, and duality.
