s-Channel Helicity Conservation with t-Channel Dynamics

Abstract

The compatibility of s-channel helicity conservation and t-channel exchanges in diffractive-type processes is examined. It is found that compatibility exists only in the infinite-energy limit. This requires specification of ratios of residue or vertex functions for t-channel helicity amplitudes. Assuming these conditions are satisfied, finite-energy corrections for ρ0 polarized photoproduction are calculated and found to be consistent with data at 2.8 and 4.7 GeV. Predicted values of spin-density matrix elements for other diffractive processes are given for the usual t-channel analysis in unpolarized experiments.
