Abstract
We propose a method, based on group theory, by which a relativistic wave equation for a few-particle system can be related to a Schrödinger-like equation in such a way that solving the latter is equivalent to obtaining the solution to the first problem. The method is applied to studying the structure of the baryons considered as built from three quarks. We calculate the relativistic form factor of the proton, and a simple two-quark effective interaction consistent with the form factor is obtained. Using this effective potential, an analysis of the baryon mass spectrum is then made.
