Abstract

The "coherent states" are constructed within the framework of an indefinite-metric linear vector space. It is found that these states have positive definite norm and are eigenstates of the annihilation operator. The theory is then applied to the free electromagnetic field and the linearized free gravitational field in the Gupta formulation. The "coherent states," restricted by the weak subsidiary condition, decompose into the usual coherent states involving only the physical degrees of freedom and an orthogonal vector of vanishing norm.
