Abstract

The cross-section defect for high-energy hadron-deuteron scattering is calculated by two methods. The widely employed "shadow" correction is shown to give a larger value than the "eikonal" calculation. A new black-sphere derivation is presented which supports the "eikonal" result. The calculation chosen may significantly affect the analysis of experimental data.
