Abstract

The reaction $\bar{p} p \to \bar{p} p π^{+} π^{-}$ has been studied for $p π^{+} π^{-}$ and $\bar{p} π^{+} π^{-}$ enhancements using 719 events at 2.7 GeV/c and 1015 events at 2.9 GeV/c. We find that the $p π^{+} π^{-}$ and $\bar{p} π^{+} π^{-}$ mass spectra can be adequately explained by assuming that the reaction proceeds 100% through the ${\bar{Δ}}^{- -} (1236) Δ^{+ +} (1236)$ channel, and that it is not necessary to assume the production of $p π^{+} π^{-}$ or $\bar{p} π^{+} π^{-}$ resonances in this reaction at these energies.
