Low-energy Be9+Pb208 scattering, breakup, and fusion within a four-body model

P. Descouvemont, T. Druet, L. F. Canto, and M. S. Hussein

Phys. Rev. C 91, 024606 (2015) - Published 11 February, 2015

In low-energy reactions weakly bound stable and exotic nuclei tend to break up. Therefore, a successful description must properly treat the break-up channels. Systematic investigation of negative Cooper-Frye contributions in heavy ion collisions using coarse-grained molecular dynamics

D. Oliinychenko, P. Huovinen, and H. Petersen

Phys. Rev. C 91, 024906 (2015) - Published 17 February, 2015

State-of-the-art modeling of high-energy nuclear collisions involves an uncertainty when switching from relativistic fluid dynamics to particle description. The authors systematically assess this uncertainty using molecular dynamics to simulate the full collision.

Anisotropic flow of thermal photons as a quark-gluon plasma viscometer

Chun Shen, Ulrich Heinz, Jean-François Paquet, Igor Kozlov, and Charles Gale

Phys. Rev. C 91, 024908 (2015) - Published 19 February, 2015

Because photons interact only electromagnetically, photons produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions can escape from the fireball during all collision stages, especially from its hot core. The authors demonstrate that by measuring the anisotropy of photons, one may infer the viscosity of QCD matter independently of inferring it from hadron production. This would be a relevant consistency check and lend confidence to the interpretation of the data.

Phys. Rev. C 91, 024916 (2015) - Published 26 February, 2015

The correlation between a pair of Λ hyperons emitted from a heavy-ion collision is shown to be sensitive to the ΛΛ interaction. The result bears on the existence of the H dibaryon. A competing analysis by the STAR Collaboration appears in PRL 114, 022301 (2015).

Superallowed 0+0+ nuclear β decays: 2014 critical survey, with precise results for Vud and CKM unitarity

J. C. Hardy and I. S. Towner

Phys. Rev. C 91, 025501 (2015) - Published 12 February, 2015

Precise measurements of the β decay between nuclear states of spin-parity 0+ and isospin 1 provide fundamental tests of the properties of the electroweak interaction. Collectively, these transitions sensitively probe the conservation of the vector weak current, set tight limits on the presence of scalar currents, and provide the most precise value for Vud. The latter result has become a linchpin in the most demanding test of the unitarity of the CKM matrix.
