The authors measure crucial neutron cross sections for 124Xe, a fusion dopant in deuterium-tritium capsules, with a predicted high neutron-capture rate. The data provides an accurate experimental basis to interpret measurements of the 125Xe/123Xe ratio, which is a sensitive diagnostic tool for the fuel density of the plasma in the capsules during the implosion.

The authors report results for NN scattering in higher partial waves based on chiral perturbation theory to 5th order in the expansion. As the first such calculation to this order, the work sets a new standard for the derivation of the NN interaction in chiral perturbation theory. The results are not very sensitive to the single cut-off parameter.

Until recently, theoretical calculations constrained by precise neutron-proton scattering data have predicted a deuteron quadrupole moment that is too small. In this paper, the quadrupole moment is calculated using the covariant spectator theory with an interaction based on meson exchanges. A detailed analysis of all the relativistic contributions demonstrates that this approach can explain the deuteron quadrupole moment very well.
