The electronic structure of a material can reveal a lot about its properties. Here, the authors map the electronic structure of the typically elusive excited states above the Fermi level throughout the full Brillouin zone in In/Si(111) nanowires. This allows for rigorous tests of current electronic structure calculation methods, and hints at a momentum-dependent excitonic coupling. In addition, extraction of the ultrafast population dynamics of these states and comparison with quasithermal modeling reveals a strongly nonequilibrium phonon distribution after photoexcitation.

The authors study theoretically thermoelectric transport of three-dimensional Dirac/Weyl materials under a magnetic field. They find that at large field the thermoelectric Hall conductivity acquires a constant, quantized value that is independent of magnetic field, carrier density, or disorder. This quantization results from chiral Landau levels of Dirac/Weyl electrons and enables an unprecedented growth in the thermopower and the thermoelectric figure of merit.

The fracton states of matter have been argued to mimic gravity. Here, the authors study a simple fracton toy model in anti-de Sitter space and show that it satisfies several important properties of holography. These properties include the correct boundary-bulk subregion duality: that the boundary mutual information (as the classical analog of entanglement entropy) obeys the well-known Ryu-Takayanagi formula, and that a naive black hole has the correct entropy. This work implies a deeper connection between fracton phases and gravity.

Scanning tunneling microscopy unveils an unprecedented energy-dependent patchwork of charge density wave (CDW) regions in 1-CuTiSe. This Cu-induced patterning is echoing a large CDW gap opening below the Fermi level. It suggests a possible coexistence of the CDW and superconducting ground states, as the two quantum condensates involve different energy ranges in the electronic band structure of CuTiSe. Finally, the well-developed CDW order in Cu-doped metallic CuTiSe rules out a solely excitonic CDW formation mechanism in this system.
