Sarma Kancharla

Sarma obtained his Ph.D. at Rutgers University in 2002, working in theoretical condensed matter physics (strongly correlated systems). He undertook postdoctoral research at Université de Sherbrooke in Québec, Canada and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee on topics such as superconductivity, doped Mott insulators, and metal-insulator transitions. He joined PRB in 2007 and became its Chief Editor in 2024.

Stephen E. Nagler

Stephen E. Nagler received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the University of Toronto. He served two years as a visiting scientist at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York, and joined the physics faculty at the University of Florida in 1984. In 1995 he moved to Tennessee, where currently he is an Emeritus Corporate Research Fellow of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and a Research Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. At Oak Ridge, his primary research interests have been quantum magnetism and correlated electron systems. He was named ORNL Scientist of the Year in 1998 and fellow of the American Physical Society in 2000. Nagler served two terms as a Divisional Associate Editor of Physical Review Letters. He joined Physical Review B as Lead Editor in 2023.

Yonko Millev

Yonko received his Ph.D. degree in condensed matter physics from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, where later he became a senior research associate after holding a teaching position at TU Sofia. He did research at ICTP in Trieste and Queen’s University of Belfast. A Humboldt Fellowship enabled a long-term collaboration with the Max Planck Institutes in Stuttgart, Leipzig, and in Halle, where he was a staff scientist. His research interests are in magnetism, phase transitions, and mathematical physics. Yonko joined PRL in 2003 before moving to PRB in 2017.

Ashot Melikyan

Ashot received a B.S. from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and a Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University, working in theoretical condensed matter physics. His postdoctoral research at the University of Florida and the Argonne National Laboratory revolved primarily around high-temperature superconductivity and mesoscopic physics. He joined PRB in 2008.

Manolis Antonoyiannakis

Manolis received his Ph.D. from Imperial College London for work on electromagnetic forces in photonic crystals. He began his editorial career at Crete University Press before joining APS in 2003, working in Physical Review B, Physical Review Letters, and Physical Review X. He also spent an 18-month sabbatical as scientific advisor to the President of the European Research Council. Since 2026, he has split his time between Physical Review Applied and Physical Review B. Manolis also serves as the APS bibliostatistics analyst, with interests in research assessment, statistically principled indicators, and peer review dynamics.

Tony Begley

Tony is a graduate of the University of Birmingham, UK, completing his Ph.D. in condensed matter physics in 1990, involving research into the electronic structure of rare-earth metals at Birmingham and at the Daresbury Laboratory, UK. His postdoctoral research, based at SUNY Stony Brook and partly at Brookhaven National Laboratory, was focused on the structure of ultrathin metal films. Tony joined PRB in 1993. He also serves as Lead Editorial Data Analyst for the American Physical Society.

Paul Snijders

Paul received his M.Sc. in Materials Science and Technology at the Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands working on the characterization of the structure of ultrathin disordered oxide films using photoelectron spectroscopy. He received his Ph.D. at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at the Delft University of Technology studying electronic instabilities and structural fluctuations in self-assembled atom wires. He worked as a Wigner Fellow and research staff member at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for ten years before joining PRB in 2017.

Victor received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Argonne National Lab and at Johns Hopkins University. His research topics include exotic superconductivity, graphene, and transport in nanostructures. He joined PRB in 2013.

Ana received her MSc from the University of Zagreb, Croatia, and her Ph.D. from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. She spent two years as a postdoc at Brookhaven National Laboratory, and later worked at the University of Geneva. She was an associate professor at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland before becoming a Professor at the University of Zagreb. Her main research interest is in magneto-optical and infrared spectroscopy of topological materials.

Emil Bozin

Emil Bozin, Associate Editor

Emil is a Senior Physicist and European Research Area Chair at the Institute of Physics Belgrade. He earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University (2003), studying nanoscale fluctuations in high-Tc cuprates. After serving as a Research Scientist at Columbia University, he joined Brookhaven National Laboratory, progressing through the ranks (2010–2025). His research interests include hierarchical atomic structure and nanoscale fluctuations in quantum materials, particularly hidden and emergent states in unconventional superconductors, charge density wave materials, and metal–insulator transition systems. A recipient of numerous distinctions, including the Science Prize of the Neutron Scattering Society of America, he is internationally recognized for advancing X-ray and neutron total scattering methods and strengthening large-scale research facility user communities.

Roberta Caruso

Roberta received her Ph.D. in 2018 from University of Naples Federico II, where she worked on the transport characterization of unconventional Josephson devices. She remained at the University of Naples until 2020, focusing on the transport properties of 2DEG interfaces. She then moved to Brookhaven National Laboratory to work on cuprate superconductors. After a short appointment as Associate Editor at Nature Communications, she joined PRL and PRB in 2024.

Jerry I. Dadap, Jr.

Jerry received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Texas at Austin. Following his postdoctoral research at Columbia University and a brief period in the telecom industry, where he worked on optical switching via micro-electromechanical systems, he returned to Columbia as a research scientist. He later moved to the University of British Columbia, where he now serves as a senior research scientist. His research focuses on the electronic structure and optical properties of 2D materials, surfaces, and strongly correlated systems, as well as nonlinear optics, integrated photonics, and ultrafast phenomena. He served as an Associate Editor for Optics Express from 2011 to 2015 and is currently an Associate Editor for Physical Review B (since 2015) and Physical Review Letters (since 2024).

Nicolas Doiron-Leyraud

Nicolas Doiron-Leyraud, Associate Editor

University of Sherbrooke, Canada

Nicolas completed his Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge in 2003, having worked on strongly correlated materials at the Cavendish Laboratory. He was then awarded a Junior Research Fellowship to pursue postdoctoral work at Cambridge. In 2004 he moved to the Université de Sherbrooke in Canada where he took up a research associate position, working chiefly on high-temperature superconductors and quantum magnets. He is now advising the Québec government on quantum technologies and joined PRB as an Associate Editor in 2021.

Keith Gilmore

Keith Gilmore, Associate Editor

Keith completed his Ph.D. in physics on the topic of magnetization dynamics at Montana State University and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He then held postdoctoral fellowships at NIST and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab before becoming a faculty member within the Nanoscience Department of Soochow University in Suzhou, China. He was subsequently a staff scientist at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France, and at Brookhaven National Lab. His research interests center around first-principles, many-body calculations for condensed matter systems with a particular emphasis on spectroscopy. Keith joined PRB in 2022.

Jason T. Haraldsen

Jason received his B.S. in chemistry and physics from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania and his Ph.D. in theoretical condensed matter physics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Oak Ridge and Los Alamos National Laboratories. Jason is currently a Professor at the University of North Florida, working on understanding complex material interactions, including magnetic and multiferroic excitations in oxides and quantum materials. He joined PRB in 2015 as an Associate Editor.

Robert received his B.Sc. from the University of Calgary and his Ph.D. from Cornell University. He works on the theory of strongly correlated systems and is currently the Chair of the Condensed Matter Physics & Materials Science Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Junjie Li

Junjie Li received his M.S. in optics in 2005 from Wuhan University and earned a Ph.D. in condensed matter physics in 2011 from Florida State University. He worked as a Research Associate at the University of Illinois, followed by a postdoctoral research associate position at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Later, he was converted to a Staff Scientist at Brookhaven. With a strong background in experimental materials physics, optics, and instrumentation, Junjie joined the Physical Review family of journals in 2023.

Awadhesh is an assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Science. He obtained his Ph.D. (2015) from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, where his dissertation won the Dan Bradley prize. After postdoctoral appointments at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA and ETH Zurich, Switzerland, he joined the Indian Institute of Science in 2019. He was selected as an outstanding referee of the American Physical Society in 2023. His research interests are in condensed matter and materials theory, including topological phases, ferroic materials, and non-Hermitian systems. He joined PRB in 2024 as an Associate Editor.

Brad received a B.S. from the University of Maryland in College Park and a Ph.D. in physics from Columbia University in 1990 (high-energy physics). He subsequently held research positions at NASA in Huntsville, Alabama and the Riken Institute in Japan. He joined PRB in 1999.

Daniel Shaffer

Daniel earned a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Minnesota in 2020 following a Summa Cum Laude double-degree in electrical engineering and physics/mathematics from Boston University. Daniel’s research focused on the theory of superconducting quantum devices, such as Josephson diodes, unconventional superconductors, open quantum systems, and quantum information. He joined PRB in 2026.

Hari Srikanth

Hari received his Ph.D. in experimental condensed matter physics from the Indian Institute of Science in 1994. After several years of postdoctoral research he joined the University of South Florida in 2000 as an Assistant Professor. He is currently a Distinguished University Professor at USF and directs the Functional Materials Laboratory. Hari’s research interests are in magnetic materials, nanomagnetism, spintronics, multiferroics, multicalorics, and correlated materials. He is a Fellow of the APS and IOP. Hari joined PRB in 2021 as an Associate Editor.

Liliana Arrachea obtained her Ph.D. from Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina, in 1995. Since then, her research positions have included Alexander von Humboldt fellow at the Free University of Berlin and the Max Planck Institute, Germany, postdoctoral researcher at SISSA, Italy, and Ramón y Cajal Researcher at the University of Zaragoza, Spain. She has been a professor at Universidad de La Plata (2008–2019), at the University of Buenos Aires since 2007 (on leave since 2016), and at the University of San Martín, Argentina, since 2016. She was also a visiting professor at PUC-Rio, Brazil , Université Paris 7, France, and at Boston University. She was appointed a Guggenheim Fellow in 2010, a Simons Associate at ICTP (2015–2021), and received a GeorgForster Research Award in 2016 from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. She is a CONICET researcher at Instituto de Nanociencia y Nanotecnología, Centro Atómico Bariloche, Argentina.

Ajit is a member of the theoretical physics department at The Institute Of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Chennai. He received his B.S. and M.S. in science (specializing in physics) from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Puneand received his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University. His thesis, carried out under the supervision of Prof. J. K. Jain, was awarded the Alumni Association dissertation award. Ajit interests lie in the equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium properties of strongly interacting quantum many-body systems such as the ones that arise in the fractional quantum Hall effect and spin liquids.

Denis received his M.S. from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 1997 and Ph.D. in physics from Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa in 2000. He has worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Rochester, International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Princeton University and Columbia University in New York. In 2008 he joined the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Grenoble, where he is working on the theory of non-equilibrium/relaxation phenomena and quantum transport in normal and superconducting nanostructures and other low-dimensional systems.

After training in solid state physics in 1984, Henri Benisty completed his Ph.D. at the Condensed Matter Physics Laboratory (PMC) at Ecole Polytechnique Palaiseau, France, followed by a postdoc at Thales TRT. He lectured at University of Versailles Saint-Quentin from 1991 to 2002. During this period, he worked on light confinement and extraction using wavelength-scale structures, especially microcavities and two-dimensional photonic crystals. Since 2002, he is a professor at the Institut d'Optique Graduate School, University of Paris –Saclay, in the Nanophotonics group of the Charles Fabry, with interest in parity-time symmetry and metasurfaces in integrated photonics, and in non-hermitian complex systems.

Emil J. Bergholtz

Emil J. Bergholtz is Professor of Theoretical Physics and Wallenberg Scholar at Stockholm University. He received his Ph.D. from Stockholm University in 2008, with a thesis on one-dimensional descriptions of quantum Hall systems. His research focuses on collective phenomena in quantum many-body systems, especially topological phases, fractional Chern insulators, moiré quantum materials, and non-Hermitian physics. He was previously a PKS Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems in Dresden and an Emmy Noether Group Leader in Berlin. His honors include the 2022 Göran Gustafsson Prize in Physics from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Elizabeth received her doctorate from the Université Joseph-Fourier in Grenoble, France, working on magnetism and superconductivity in strongly correlated electron materials. She worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, San Diego, then joined the physics faculty at the University of Birmingham, UK, before joining Lund University. She was awarded the Institute of Physics’ Henry Moseley Medal in 2014. In 2018, she took up a professorship at Lund University, Sweden, where her work focuses on the study of magnetic and superconducting materials, primarily using neutron and x-ray scattering.

Alexey Chernikov obtained his doctoral degree at the University of Marburg, Germany, studying optical properties of semiconducting materials and external cavity semiconducting lasers in 2012. In 2013, he was granted a Feodor-Lynen Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to conduct his postdoctoral research on Coulomb phenomena in atomically-thin 2D systems in the group of Tony F. Heinz at Columbia University, New York. Alexey joined TU Dresden, Germany, in 2021 as a full professor. His research is focused on studying and understanding electronic and optical many-particle phenomena in low-dimensional systems. He is a recipient of the Emmy Noether Research Grant, Heinz-Maier Leibnitz Prize of the German Science Foundation, and ERC Consolidator Grant.

Hugo Dil is adjunct professor at the Institute of Physics at the EPFL, Switzerland, and the Paul Scherrer Institute,Switzerland. After finishing his studies at the Delft University of Technology, Netherlands, he obtained his Ph.D. in 2006 at the Fritz Haber Institute, Germany, studying quantum size effects in thin metal films. In 2014 he was awarded the Heinrich Rohrer Rising Medal, and, in 2015, the University Latis Prize. In his experimental research he focuses on the role of the electron spin in the electronic structure of materials with broken symmetries and strong interactions.

Dr. Defang Duan is a Professor in the college of physics at Jilin University. She received her Ph.D. degree in condensed matter physics in 2011 from Jilin University and served one year as a visiting scientist at University of Cambridge in 2018. She received the 2015 China Top Ten Youth Science and Technology Award. She research focuses on the crystal structures, electronic structures and exotic superconductivity of condensed matters under high pressure, including hydrides, borides and 2D materials.

Yann Gallais is a professor of physics at Université Paris Cité, France. He obtained his Ph.D. in 2003 from ESPCI-Paris and Sorbonne Université. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University before joining Université Paris Cité in 2007. His research focuses on quantum materials including unconventional superconductors, magnets, and 2D materials, which he studies via spectroscopic techniques in both static and ultrafast settings.

Li Ge is a Professor of Physics at the City University of New York (CUNY), affiliated with the College of Staten Island (CSI) and the CUNY Graduate Center. He obtained his Ph.D. in physics from Yale University in 2010 and was a postdoctoral associate at Princeton before joining CUNY in 2013. He received an National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2019 and a Dolphin Award for Outstanding Scholarly Achievements from CSI in 2023. He was elected a fellow of Optica (formerly the Optical Society of America) in 2024. His current research interest includes quantum-inspired symmetries and topologies in non-Hermitian systems as well as laser physics in complex and random media.

Er-Jia Guo holds the position of full professor at the Institute of Physics (IOP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and serves as an adjunct professor at the University of CAS. He received his Ph..D from IOP, CAS, then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Martin Luther University at Halle-Wittenberg, Mainz University, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His research interest is focused on the quantum phenomena at correlated heterogeneity interfaces, including oxides, nitrides, and other low-dimensional materials. His prolific contributions to the field are evident in over 160 published journal articles and over 30 invited talks.

Matthew Hastings works on the quantum program at Microsoft. He received his Ph.D. in 1997 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in soft matter physics with Leonid Levitov and later moved to hard condensed matter physics. He is currently interested in quantum information and computation and in mathematical physics.

Igor Herbut

Igor Herbut is a professor of physics at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. After receiving his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1995, he spent three years as a Killam postdoctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia. He is interested in field theories of interacting electrons, higher-spin pairing and multicomponent superconductivity, and physics of semimetals such as graphene and half-Heusler compounds. He is an author of a graduate textbook on critical phenomena published by the Cambridge University Press, a Fellow of the American Physical Society, and a recipient of the Marko Jaric Award for 2017. He was also awarded the Dresden Physics Prize, given by Max Planck Institute MPI PKS and the Technical University, Dresden, in 2025.

Philip Hofmann

Philip Hofmann is a condensed matter experimental physicist, a professor at Aarhus University in Denmark, and the Scientific Director of the synchrotron radiation source ASTRID2. He received his Ph.D. from the Fritz-Haber-Institute in Germany in 1994, focusing on surface structural determination using x-ray photoelectron diffraction. He is currently interested in time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on quantum materials, particularly in performing ARPES with high spatial resolution in nonequilibrium situations. He is also working again with x-ray photoelectron diffraction but now on the ultrafast time scale using the new free-electron laser sources. He was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2022.

Yasir Iqbal

Yasir received his M.Sc from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and Ph.D. from University of Toulouse, France. He conducted his postdoctoral research at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste and University of Würzburg, Germany, before joining as faculty at the physics department of IIT Madras in 2017. He is a Simons associate of the ICTP and Faculty associate of the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, Bangalore. His research spans topics in frustrated magnetism centered around spin liquids, symmetry classification schemes, and development and application of numerical quantum many-body approaches.

Marcelo Jaime

Marcelo Jaime earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the Instituto Balseiro, Bariloche, Argentina, in 1994. From 1995 to 1999, he held postdoctoral positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he studied colossal magnetoresistance compounds (manganites), and at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), where he developed calorimetric techniques to study magnetism, superconductivity, and quantum phase transitions in strongly correlated electron materials in cryogenic environments and very pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 Tesla. From 2000 to 2023, Marcelo was a staff scientist at LANL's Pulsed Magnetic Field Facility, where he pioneered techniques to measure quantum materials' properties in magnetic fields up to 150 Tesla. His contributions earned him several awards, including the LANL LAAP Teamwork Award (1999), the James J. Christensen Memorial Award (2007), and the LANL Distinguished Performance Award (2012). A Fellow of both the AAAS and APS, Marcelo served a 4-year leadership term (2021–2024) with the APS Topical Group on Magnetism and its Applications. In 2023, he joined the APS Physical Review B Editorial Board and became a scientist at the Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt (German Metrology Institute) in Braunschweig, Germany. Marcelo has published nearly 200 peer-reviewed papers in experimental solid-state physics, with over 13,000 citations and an h-index of 52 (according to Google).

Steve Johnston

Steve Johnston

Steve obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo in 2010 for work on electron-phonon interactions in strongly correlated electron systems. He was then a postdoctoral fellow at the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research in Dresden, Germany (2010–2012) and the University of British Columbia (2012–2013) before joining the faculty at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he is currently the Bains Professor of Physics & Astronomy. Steve has broad expertise in computational methods, and his current research interests are in strongly correlated systems, electron-phonon interactions, and model spectroscopic probes such as resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. He is also the primary investigator for the SmoQy Suite of many-body codes.

Since 2000, Andreas Knorr has been a professor at the Technical University of Berlin. He received his Ph.D. at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena 1993 and then worked at the University of New Mexico and the University of Arizona (College of Optical Sciences) as a fellow of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes. He worked at the universities in Goettingen and Marburg and was a visitor at Sandia National Labs Albuquerque, NTT Tokyo and Queens University in Ontario, Canada. Andreas served as a Divisional Associate Editor of the Editorial Board of Physical Review Letters from 2013 to 2018 and is currently a Stephenson Distinguished Visitor at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY. He works in the field of ultrafast nonlinear optics and quantum electronics of nanostructured solids. Markus Morgenstern has been a full professor at RWTH Aachen University since 2004. He uses scanning tunneling spectroscopy down to 400 mK in magnetic fields up to 14 T and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy at mm spatial resolution. With these methods, he probes van der Waals materials such as magnetic 2D materials and graphene, as well as topological insulator materials, including magnetic ones. He also develops novel instruments, such as scanning tunneling microscopes operating with cryogen-free cooling. He received his Ph.D. in 1996 at the Research Center Jülich and the Walter Schottky Prize of the German Physical Society in 2004. His research focuses on studying 2D magnetism, 2D superconductivity, and topology by using various techniques, such as nanodevice fabrication, magneto-optics, quantum transport, thermoelectrics, optoelectronics, optical spectroscopy and microscopy. He received the DOE Early Career Research Program Award, Lee Osheroff Richardson Science Prize, and Guo Moruo Presidential Scholarship.

Zhi-Da Song received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2018. He subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at Princeton University before joining Peking University as an Assistant Professor in late 2021. His research focuses on the classification of topological phases, correlation effects in topological materials, theoretical studies of strong correlation, superconductivity, and topology in moiré systems, electronic transport theory, as well as unconventional magnetism and spin-space group symmetries.

Pavel A. Volkov has been an Assistant Professor at the University of Connecticut since Fall 2023. Pavel obtained his Ph.D. in 2018 at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, followed by postdoctoral positions at Rutgers University (as Abrahams Postdoctoral Fellow) and Harvard University. His independent research has been recognized by Martin and Beate Block Award from the Aspen Center for Physics (2022) and Nevill F. Mott Prize (2025). Pavel’s research is in the theory of strongly correlated quantum materials spanning 2D and moiré systems, unconventional superconductivity, polar metals and insulators, and materials driven out of equilibrium.

Shenglong Xu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Texas A&M University. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California, San Diego in 2017, and then became a postdoctoral researcher at the Condensed Matter Theory Center at the University of Maryland. He joined the faculty at Texas A&M in 2020. His research focuses on condensed matter theory and quantum physics, with a current emphasis on understanding the behavior of quantum many-body systems far from equilibrium, including entanglement growth and information spreading.
