Nitrogen-vacancy centers and substitutional nitrogen (P1 centers) in diamond have until now been the only solid-state electron spin defects known to reach millisecond spin relaxation times (T) at room temperature. Here, the authors report spin dynamics and optical spin polarization of the WAR5 defect in diamond, hypothesized to be the neutral oxygen vacancy center. Its T is among the longest of any solid-state spin defect: ~1 ms at room temperature, rising to ~14 minutes at 4 K.
