Information dynamics in decohered quantum memory with repeated syndrome measurements

Repeated measurements can help protect information in decohered quantum memories. Here, the authors intrinsically characterize the information dynamics in such systems. In particular, they develop a (d+1)-dimensional statistical mechanics model for information-theoretic quantities characterizing the dynamics of d-dimensional stabilizer codes subject to Pauli errors and noisy measurements. The resulting model is dual to the model previously obtained for the optimal decoding algorithm, with decoding transitions manifesting as thermal phase transitions in both cases.

Investigating anharmonicities in polarization-orientation Raman spectra of acene crystals with machine learning

Ultrafast switching of antiferromagnetic order by field-derivative torque

Achieving fast and deterministic control of antiferromagnetic order remains a central challenge for next-generation spintronic devices. Here, the authors show that circularly polarized terahertz magnetic field pulses can deterministically switch antiferromagnetic order via field-derivative torque. By exploiting the time derivative of the applied field, their work significantly reduces switching thresholds and establishes a promising route toward ultrafast antiferromagnetic spintronics. The results reveal how tailoring pulse shape and damping can be used to optimize switching efficiency on sub-picosecond timescales.

Platform for zero-field isolated skyrmions: 4d/Co atomic bilayers on Re(0001)

Here, the authors identify atomic bilayers of Rh/Co and Pd/Co on the Re(0001) surface as a promising platform to realize isolated skyrmions in the absence of an external magnetic field. Using an atomistic spin model, including higher-order multi-spin exchange interactions and completely parameterized from density functional theory, they show that zero-field isolated skyrmions emerge with diameters on the order of 10–20 nm with substantial energy barriers, indicating the possibility of experimental verification at low temperatures.

Disentangling sources of loss in microwave circuits and identifying their microscopic underpinnings is challenging. Here, the authors combine detailed materials characterization, structural analysis, dc transport measurements, and microwave measurements to directly link anomalous microwave losses in state-of-the-art tantalum resonators to thermally activated vortex motion. The authors show that subtle structural variations associated with growth conditions can strongly modify magnetic flux pinning, and that pinning can be deliberately introduced via microfabrication.

Electronic reconstruction and interface engineering of emergent spin fluctuations in compressively strained La3Ni2O7 on SrLaAlO4(001)

Here, the authors combine first-principles simulations and spin-susceptibility analysis to explore La3Ni2O7 on SrLaAlO4(001), explicitly treating the interface. They find that compressive strain alone leads to an unconventional occupation of the antibonding Ni 3dz2 states, fundamentally different from pressure, yet with limited enhancement of the dynamical spin-spin correlations. In contrast, changes in electronic structure induced near the reconstructed interface substantially amplify the spin fluctuations. The results establish interface effects as a central element in understanding ambient-pressure superconductivity in bilayer nickelate films.

Here, the authors identify atomic bilayers of Rh/Co and Pd/Co on the Re(0001) surface as a promising platform to realize isolated skyrmions in the absence of an external magnetic field. Using an atomistic spin model, including higher-order multi-spin exchange interactions and completely parameterized from density functional theory, they show that zero-field isolated skyrmions emerge with diameters on the order of 10–20 nm with substantial energy barriers, indicating the possibility of experimental verification at low temperatures.

Confirming altermagnetism in RuO2 requires a precise understanding of mechanisms governing its spin transport. Using ultrafast terahertz emission spectroscopy, the authors investigate here the origins of spin-to-charge conversion in this controversial candidate material. By carefully disentangling competing signals, they reveal that the observed signal anisotropy arises primarily from an unconventional inverse spin Hall effect, not the predicted altermagnetic spin-splitter effect. This work provides a rigorous benchmark for the field, emphasizing the necessity of distinguishing relativistic spin-orbit coupling from unconventional magnetic order.

Disentangling sources of loss in microwave circuits and identifying their microscopic underpinnings is challenging. Here, the authors combine detailed materials characterization, structural analysis, dc transport measurements, and microwave measurements to directly link anomalous microwave losses in state-of-the-art tantalum resonators to thermally activated vortex motion. The authors show that subtle structural variations associated with growth conditions can strongly modify magnetic flux pinning, and that pinning can be deliberately introduced via microfabrication.

Here, the authors combine first-principles simulations and spin-susceptibility analysis to explore La3Ni2O7 on SrLaAlO4(001), explicitly treating the interface. They find that compressive strain alone leads to an unconventional occupation of the antibonding Ni 3dz2 states, fundamentally different from pressure, yet with limited enhancement of the dynamical spin-spin correlations. In contrast, changes in electronic structure induced near the reconstructed interface substantially amplify the spin fluctuations. The results establish interface effects as a central element in understanding ambient-pressure superconductivity in bilayer nickelate films.
