Density functional theory study of the interaction between NV centers and native defects in diamond

The negatively charged nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond is a color center that has applications for nanoscale sensing of electric, magnetic, and strain fields. Motivated by these applications, the authors combine first-principles calculations with continuum models to study the interactions between NV centers and nearby native defects in diamond, such as vacancies and interstitials. This is achieved via changes in NV optical properties from the electric fields and strains created by the native defects. The authors also theoretically demonstrate how measurements on multiple NV centers near a native defect can characterize its type and charge state.

Information phases of partial projected ensembles generated from random quantum states and scrambling dynamics

How is quantum information distributed in complex many-body systems? Here, using partially projected ensembles, the authors show that the Holevo information in such ensembles uncovers sharp “information phases” invisible to standard entanglement measures. For Haar random states and late-time scrambling dynamics, it exhibits a qualitative change in scaling—from exponential decay to linear growth—separated by nonanalytic transitions as subsystem sizes vary. The decaying regime establishes a measurement-invisible quantum correlated phase, providing a finer probe for understanding scrambling and information structure in chaotic quantum systems beyond conventional entanglement measures.

Chiral phonons, collective atomic rotations in crystals, have been experimentally identified mainly in trigonal chiral materials. Here, the authors demonstrate chiral phonons in the sixfold chiral semiconductor CrSi2 using circularly polarized Raman spectroscopy. Polarization-dependent frequency splittings of doubly degenerate phonon modes reveal the handedness of the crystal, and first-principles calculations confirm their rotational character. Programmable cavity magnonics via the Goldstone mode of bilayer cuprate antiferromagnets

Here, the authors report the crystal and electronic structures, and superconductivity of h-NbS single crystals with site-selective Nb vacancies. This compound has a noncentrosymmetric lattice structure and exhibits Nb vacancy dependent electronic structure. h-NbS is a two-gap s+s-wave superconductor with a moderate coupling strength. The broken inversion symmetry leads to a Pauli limit violation in this three-dimensional superconductor with very low anisotropy. These findings highlight the interplay between crystal symmetry, dimensionality, stoichiometry, and superconductivity in transition metal chalcogenide superconductors.

Here, the authors report the first observations of two-dimensional plasma resonance with linear dispersion in superconducting NbN films on dielectric substrates. Plasmons manifest themselves as resonance dips in terahertz transmission of the sample with NbN discs. Those peaks shift to the lower frequency and broaden with increasing temperature, being absent above Tc. Dispersion of these plasmonic excitations showed linear dependence, similar to the provided theoretical prediction calculated for the two-component system consisting of Cooper pairs and normal electrons.

The authors demonstrate here that bilayer cuprate antiferromagnets host two symmetry-distinct zone-center magnon modes: a gapless, Zeeman-tunable acoustic mode and a field-stiff, anisotropy-gapped optical mode. Magnetic-dipole coupling of these modes to a microwave cavity yields asymmetric light-matter channels, enabling continuous tuning from dispersive to strong-coupling regimes, cavity-mediated magnon-magnon exchange, and bright-dark mode reorganization near triple resonance.

Here, the authors report the crystal and electronic structures, and superconductivity of h-NbS single crystals with site-selective Nb vacancies. This compound has a noncentrosymmetric lattice structure and exhibits Nb vacancy dependent electronic structure. h-NbS is a two-gap s+s-wave superconductor with a moderate coupling strength. The broken inversion symmetry leads to a Pauli limit violation in this three-dimensional superconductor with very low anisotropy. These findings highlight the interplay between crystal symmetry, dimensionality, stoichiometry, and superconductivity in transition metal chalcogenide superconductors.

The authors investigate here ballistic transport in an electronic cavity, sandwiched between a metal and a superconductor, going beyond a Sharvin-like point-contact description of Andreev reflection and incorporating the full two-dimensional nature of modern ballistic devices. A distinctive magnetic field response of two subgap conductance peaks is understood as resulting from interfering Andreev trajectories that are separable into open and closed trajectory classes. Open trajectories are magnetic field independent, and closed ones are affected by the Aharonov-Bohm and Doppler effects.
