Vortex jets generated by edge defects in current-carrying superconductor thin strips

At sufficiently large transport currents, a defect at the edge of a superconducting strip acts as a gate for the vortices entering it. These vortices form a jet, which is narrow near the defect and expands due to the repulsion of vortices as they move to the opposite edge of the strip, giving rise to a transverse voltage. Here, the authors predict a nonmonotonicity of the transverse current-voltage curve which can be measured with Hall voltage leads placed at a rather small distance apart from the edge defect. The authors corroborate their findings experimentally for MoSi thin strips with individual edge defects as well as numerically, reproducing the calculated vortex jet shapes and transverse I-V curves.

The compound Mn3Si2Te6 consists of alternating honeycomb and triangular lattice layers of Mn sites along the c axis. This geometry leads to competing antiferromagnetic interactions that result in ferrimagnetic order. This arrangement, coupled with a small spin-orbit coupling on the Mn sites, results in anisotropic thermodynamic measurements. Here, inelastic neutron scattering experiments are examined to refine the exchange interactions and to examine the extent of the spin-orbit coupling via quantification of the anisotropic exchange parameters.

Quantum disordered magnetic states in two-dimensional spin-½ systems remain a key research problem. The “cupola” material Ba(TiO)Cu4(PO4)4 has a square-lattice geometry featuring frustrated magnetic interactions with spin and spatial anisotropies. Here, inelastic neutron scattering is used to measure the full spin excitation spectrum at zero and finite applied fields, and thus deduce all of the relevant interactions. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling within each cupola ensures a gapped state with robust noncoplanar magnetic order, which has clear potential for field-induced topological properties.

The polar ferrimagnet CaBaCo4O7 exhibits the largest magnetic field driven electric polarization change ΔP reported so far in a narrow temperature range. Here, the authors demonstrate that only 2.5% of Ni substitution for Co increases the magnitude of ΔP by about 30%, as well as expanding the temperature range in which the giant ΔP appears down to a low temperature. This is attributable to the switching of the low-temperature zero magnetic field state from a ferrimagnetic to an antiferromagnetic state.

The precise crystal symmetry, and hence the emergence of the electric polarization, still remains an open question in multiferroic RMn2O5 (R=rare earth, Bi, Y). While previous diffraction studies have indicated the centrosymmetric space group Pbam, an atomic displacement allowing for electric polarization would require a noncentrosymmetric symmetry. Here, single-crystal neutron diffraction experiments on TbMn2O5 provide direct evidence of a reduced crystallographic symmetry with the polar space group P1211 already above the multiferroic phase transition, indicating that a symmetric SiSj spin coupling, i.e., magnetostriction is the dominant mechanism in the commensurate magnetic phase.

Scattering of spin waves by a Bloch domain wall: Effect of the dipolar interaction

It is known that if the dipolar interaction is ignored or replaced by an effective magnetic anisotropy, the theoretical computations predict that a domain wall is transparent to spin waves. Taking into account the full complexity of this interaction, the authors show that the domain wall does indeed reflect spin waves. The scattering parameters are computed by treating the dipolar interaction perturbatively in the Born approximation, which is not straightforward due to the nonlocality of this interaction. A lateral shift of the scattered waves is also predicted.

Fluctuation-induced odd-frequency spin-triplet pairing in a disordered electron liquid

The authors mix fluctuations of different origin to obtain pairing in the odd-frequency spin-triplet channel. Such fluctuations are enhanced in disordered two-dimensional systems, and the pairing is predicted to be sufficient for the instability in the odd-frequency spin-triplet channel.

At sufficiently large transport currents, a defect at the edge of a superconducting strip acts as a gate for the vortices entering it. These vortices form a jet, which is narrow near the defect and expands due to the repulsion of vortices as they move to the opposite edge of the strip, giving rise to a transverse voltage. Here, the authors predict a nonmonotonicity of the transverse current-voltage curve which can be measured with Hall voltage leads placed at a rather small distance apart from the edge defect. The authors corroborate their findings experimentally for MoSi thin strips with individual edge defects as well as numerically, reproducing the calculated vortex jet shapes and transverse I-V curves.
