Revealing pressure-driven structural transitions in the hybrid improper ferroelectric Sr3Sn2O7

The authors bring together diamond anvil cell techniques, infrared spectroscopy, a symmetry analysis, and lattice dynamics calculations to reveal the series of pressure-induced structural phase transitions in the hybrid improper ferroelectric Sr3Sn2O7. Remarkably, the pressure and temperature progressions are identical, and this information is used to develop the phase diagram. Pressure and probably strain are highly advantageous for device applications in this family of materials because the entire series of transitions can be triggered at room temperature.

Understanding the interaction between photoexcited carriers and valence excitons is crucial to the development of optoelectronics. However, the influence of carriers on core excitons, the strongly bound core-level excitations due to electron–core-hole interactions, is not fully explored. By conducting optical–extreme-ultraviolet transient absorption spectroscopy at two different core-level absorption edges in WS2 simultaneously, the authors here not only measure the picosecond relaxation of optically excited carriers, but also observe carrier-induced modifications to core-exciton transitions and their few-femtosecond free induction decay.

BaNi2V2O8 is a solid-state compound with a three-dimensional crystal structure, but it reveals entirely two-dimensional (2D) magnetic properties. Depending on the temperature regime, BaNi2V2O8 exhibits different 2D magnetic behaviors, providing unique experimental access to exotic magnetic phenomena. In particular, within the planar regime it provides a rare opportunity to explore Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless criticality in solid-state antiferromagnets. Indeed, a comparison of the experimental results here to theoretical models developed for the Hamiltonian of this compound illuminates clear signatures for BKT critical behavior.

Superconducting state of Sr2RuO4 in the presence of longer-range Coulomb interactions

The material Sr2RuO4 is notorious for the difficulty in reconciling all experimental characterizations of its superconducting order parameter. In this theoretical study, the authors explore what superconducting order parameters are most favorable from the perspective of spin-fluctuation mediated pairing, taking into account the multiorbital nature of the system and its sizable spin-orbit coupling. They find that longer-range Coulomb interactions induce a near-degeneracy between nodal s-wave and dxy superconductivity, suggesting a ground-state condensate with time-reversal symmetry breaking of the form s+idxy.

The material Sr2RuO4 is notorious for the difficulty in reconciling all experimental characterizations of its superconducting order parameter. In this theoretical study, the authors explore what superconducting order parameters are most favorable from the perspective of spin-fluctuation mediated pairing, taking into account the multiorbital nature of the system and its sizable spin-orbit coupling. They find that longer-range Coulomb interactions induce a near-degeneracy between nodal s-wave and dxy superconductivity, suggesting a ground-state condensate with time-reversal symmetry breaking of the form s+idxy.
