Characterization of Er3+:YVO4 for microwave to optical transduction

Tian Xie, Jake Rochman, John G. Bartholomew, Andrei Ruskuc, Jonathan M. Kindem, Ioana Craiciu, Charles W. Thiel, Rufus L. Cone, and Andrei Faraon

Phys. Rev. B 104, 054111 (2021) - Published 16 August, 2021

Rare-earth-ion doped crystals are a promising platform for applications in microwave-to-optical transduction. Erbium is of special interest because of its telecom wavelength optical transitions. This work investigates the optical and electron-spin properties of Er3+:YVO4. An initial transduction of classical microwave signal using this material is demonstrated. The measured strong optical dipole moment and narrow ensemble inhomogeneities make Er3+:YVO4 a promising material for microwave-to-optical transduction.

Ubiquity of amplitude-modulated magnetic ordering in the HT phase diagram of the frustrated non-Fermi-liquid YbAgGe

Phys. Rev. B 104, 054424 (2021) - Published 17 August, 2021

YbAgGe contains a magnetic geometrically frustrated kagome-like lattice that features significant local single-ion anisotropy. The electronic state is established by hybridization of 4f and conduction electrons, leading to heavy electronic masses. Competition between these various interactions leads to nontrivial behavior under external magnetic field. Here, the authors present neutron diffraction experiments under magnetic fields up to 8 T in the hexagonal plane, revealing the microscopic nature of the first four subsequent magnetic states, and propose further steps to understand the microscopic interactions.

Unidirectional magnetoresistance and spin-orbit torque in NiMnSb

Phys. Rev. B 104, 054429 (2021) - Published 23 August, 2021

Electrical detection of magnetization reversal typically requires three-terminal devices or nanoscopic heterostructures, such as magnetic tunnel junctions. Recently, the so-called unidirectional magnetoresistance has been discovered, which allows detecting magnetization reversals using two-terminal measurements. Here, the authors theoretically and experimentally study the unidirectional magnetoresistance in bulk ferromagnetic NiMnSb and show that its origin is not directly related to the current-induced spin accumulation that gives rise to the spin-orbit torques. They also show the emergence of components transverse to the electric field.

Strain-induced time reversal breaking and half quantum vortices near a putative superconducting tetracritical point in Sr2RuO4

Andrew C. Yuan, Erez Berg, and Steven A. Kivelson

Phys. Rev. B 104, 054518 (2021) - Published 26 August, 2021

Motivated by continuing debate concerning the pairing symmetries of Sr2RuO4, the authors develop a general description of a situation in which superconducting orders are nearly degenerate. They suggest that many seemingly contradictory experimental findings can be reconciled if one assumes this material is near a tetracritical point, where small variations in strain can lead to rich phenomenology. More specifically, the authors characterize possible superconducting domain walls, allowing for spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking and the stabilization of half-quantum vortices.

Combined with stability and metallicity screening, this allows the investigation of hundreds of thousands of candidates from across the periodic table, found via crystal structure prediction. From the best candidates, full electron-phonon calculations reveal many promising materials, including superconductivity at ~260 K in NaH6 at 100 GPa, and ~380 K (106 °C) in MgH12 at 500 GPa.

Phys.
