Electrical conductivity in the Hubbard model: Orbital effects of magnetic field

The authors study here electrical conductivity in the Hubbard model on a square lattice in a perpendicular magnetic field. They present the formalism in full detail, and perform extensive dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations to scan the phase diagram. They show that the vertex corrections cancel within DMFT, and that reliable results can be obtained even from the zero-field self-energy. The dc conductivity exhibits Shubnikov–de Haas quantum oscillations as well asrecently observed Brown-Zak oscillations.

The authors develop a first-principles methodology to fully address a fundamental process in solids, namely, the phonon-induced inelastic scattering of x-rays, electrons, or neutrons. Beside obtaining excellent agreement between theory and experiment, they demonstrate that multiphonon effects can modify drastically scattering signals for a wide range of scattering wavevectors. The present method opens the way for large-scale high-throughput calculations, enabling accurate interpretation of ultrafast diffuse scattering experiments.

Critical drag as a mechanism for resistivity

The authors show that there is a general connection between the ability of a quantum many-body system to carry dissipationless electrical current and a continuous symmetry, possibly emergent, that has a “mixed anomaly” with the electric charge. When such a condition is satisfied (for example, due to momentum conservation), there is one and only way to still obtain nonzero resistivity: through a mechanism the authors dub “critical drag”, where the resistivity comes from critical fluctuations of an order parameter.

When a current is passed from Pt through a ferromagnetic metal like Co (or permalloy) into another layer of Pt, then the charge current first acquires then loses spin polarization on a length scale determined by spin-orbit coupling and disorder, alloy disorder, temperature-induced lattice or spin disorder, or the disorder represented by the interfaces. The authors demonstrate by determining the spin current js(z) from first-principles quantum-mechanical scattering calculations that it is possible to extract the five bulk and three interface parameters used to describe spin transport in such systems as a function of temperature.

Propagating Majorana modes at the edge of topological superconductors are promising candidates for future qubits in fault-tolerant quantum computing. However, their experimental detection by electrical means is challenging. In this work, the authors propose the phase-dependent transverse thermal conductance of Josephson junctions as a new way to probe helical Majorana modes. They give rise to a thermal conductance that is quantized by half the thermal conductance quantum, while trivial Andreev bound states lead to an exponentially suppressed thermal conductance.

When a current is passed from Pt through a ferromagnetic metal like Co (or permalloy) into another layer of Pt, then the charge current first acquires then loses spin polarization on a length scale determined by spin-orbit coupling and disorder, alloy disorder, temperature-induced lattice or spin disorder, or the disorder represented by the interfaces. The authors demonstrate by determining the spin current js(z) from first-principles quantum-mechanical scattering calculations that it is possible to extract the five bulk and three interface parameters used to describe spin transport in such systems as a function of temperature.
