Ab initio ultrafast spin dynamics in solids

Junqing Xu, Adela Habib, Ravishankar Sundararaman, and Yuan Ping

Phys. Rev. B 104, 184418 (2021) - Published 17 November, 2021

The authors develop first-principles real-time density-matrix approach to directly simulate ultrafast pump-probe measurements for coupled spin and electron dynamics of general solids over ns at any temperature and doping levels. The approach is based on Lindblad dynamics and includes complete first-principles descriptions of pump, probe, and scattering processes of electron-phonon, electron-impurity, and electron-electron scatterings with self-consistent spin-orbit coupling.

Quantum many-body states and Green's functions of nonequilibrium electron-magnon systems: Localized spin operators versus their mapping to Holstein-Primakoff bosons

Utkarsh Bajpai, Abhin Suresh, and Branislav K. Nikolić

Phys. Rev. B 104, 184425 (2021) - Published 22 November, 2021

In spintronics and magnonics, the operators of localized spins are typically mapped to Holstein-Primakoff bosons, whose series expansion is truncated at a low order so as to make possible the use of Feynman diagrammatic techniques. However, this work demonstrates that tracking the exact nonequilibrium dynamics of localized spins, alone or interacting with conduction electrons, requires a prohibitively large order of truncation beyond the femtosecond timescale. Nevertheless, this can be remedied by the very recently proposed resummed Holstein-Primakoff transformation.

Theory of Hofstadter superconductors

Daniel Shaffer, Jian Wang, and Luiz H. Santos

Phys. Rev. B 104, 184501 (2021) - Published 5 November, 2021

The Hofstadter butterfly has long fascinated theorists, but it is only recently that the butterfly has been seen in moiré systems. Its rich fractal structure can be understood fromsymmetry analysis of the magnetic translation group. Similar symmetry analysis reveals a new, equally rich, structure when Hofstadter systems become superconducting. The authors use this result to formulate a mean-field theory of Hofstadter superconductivity and analyze some of their topological properties, such as Chern numbers and Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces.

Gate tunability of the superconducting state at the EuO/KTaO3 (111) interface

Weiliang Qiao, Yang Ma, Jiaojie Yan, Wenyu Xing, Yunyan Yao, Ranran Cai, Boning Li, Richen Xiong, X. C. Xie, Xi Lin, and Wei Han

Phys. Rev. B 104, 184505 (2021) - Published 10 November, 2021

Observation of superconductivity at the interface of EuO/KTaO3 (111) heterostructures came as a surprise, especially with Tc being a factor of five higher compared to that in SrTiO3 heterostructures. Here, the authors conduct a systematic investigation of the superconducting state at the EuO/KTaO3 interface by varying the carrier density. Very interestingly, the gate dependence of the upper critical magnetic field exhibits a trend opposite to that of Tc in the underdoped region, suggesting relatively larger Cooper pairing potential.

Nonunitary entanglement dynamics in continuous-variable systems

Tianci Zhou and Xiao Chen

Phys. Rev. B 104, L180301 (2021) - Published 1 November, 2021

Entanglement can experience a phase transition in quantum circuits with measurements. Though widely expected for qudit systems, the authors show the absence of transition in continuous variable models. They construct generic circuits with Gaussian unitaries and Gaussian measurements, whose entanglement always satisfies an area-law scaling for any finite measurement rate. The authors ascribe this to the imbalance of time scales, whereby the time to destroy entanglement is much shorter than the time to build it up due to the unbounded local Hilbert space.

Phys.
