Experimental measurement of the isolated magnetic susceptibility

D. Billington, C. Paulsen, E. Lhotel, J. Cannon, E. Riordan, M. Salman, G. Klemencic, C. Cafolla-Ward, D. Prabhakaran, S. R. Giblin, and S. T. Bramwell

Phys. Rev. B 104, 014418 (2021) - Published 15 July, 2021

The wonder of quantum mechanics – epitomized by Schrödinger’s both-alive-and-dead cat – is rarely encountered in macroscopic measurements, where quantum details are often obscured. This paper shows how a macroscopic measurement of magnetic susceptibility – using a simple coil of wire -– reveals the tunable superposition or “concurrence” of ionic spin up and down states – just like Schrödinger’s thought experiment reveals the superposition of alive and dead. The measurement further provides a means of measuring nonequilibrium populations of these quantum states.

Geometrical frustration and competing orders in the dipolar trimerized triangular lattice

Kevin Hofhuis, Charlotte F. Petersen, Michael Saccone, Scott Dhuey, Armin Kleibert, Sebastiaan van Dijken, and Alan Farhan

Phys. Rev. B 104, 014409 (2021) - Published 8 July, 2021

The authors introduce here an artificial spin system consisting of single-domain nanomagnets that are lithographically defined into trimers. Placing these trimers into a triangular lattice with a variable lattice parameter allows for direct control of competing interactions. The result is a system that can move between two long-range ordered phases: a vortex-dominated phase and a ferromagnetic phase. When competing interactions are perfectly tuned, however, the system gets caught within a highly disordered phase with short-range correlations.

Double accumulation and anisotropic transport of magnetoelastic bosons in yttrium iron garnet films

Pascal Frey, Dmytro A. Bozhko, Victor S. L'vov, Burkard Hillebrands, and Alexander A. Serga

Phys. Rev. B 104, 014420 (2021) - Published 19 July, 2021

Here, the authors use the avoided crossing region created via magnetoelastic coupling between the magnonic and phononic dispersion in yttrium iron garnet films as a thermalization gateway for an artificially populated magnon gas. Magnons thermalizing through the hybridization region become hybrid quasiparticles that mix magnon and phonon properties. Due to the varying magnon-phonon interaction, they experience bottleneck accumulation near the bottom of the magnon spectrum, forming two quasiparticle groups with different propagation directions and velocity values.

Quantum critical dynamics of a Josephson junction at the topological transition

Vladislav D. Kurilovich, Chaitanya Murthy, Pavel D. Kurilovich, Bernard van Heck, Leonid I. Glazman, and Chetan Nayak

Phys. Rev. B 104, 014509 (2021) - Published 15 July, 2021

Suppression of conventional superconductivity by a magnetic field closes the gap in electronic excitations and brings back the normal-state conductivity. This simple pattern does not apply to a Majorana wire tuned to the topological phase transition. While the spectral gap also vanishes at the transition in such a wire, the dissipative dynamic response may still be suppressed, showing a strong dependence on frequency and temperature. This unusual behavior is controlled by the symmetries of the wire.

Bose-Luttinger liquids

Ethan Lake, T. Senthil, and Ashvin Vishwanath

Phys. Rev. B 104, 014517 (2021) - Published 26 July, 2021

The authors theoretically investigate theoretically exotic phases of matter, dubbed “Bose-Luttinger liquids,” which can loosely be thought of as bosonic Fermi liquids. Despite being bosonic and consequently lacking degeneracy pressure, these systems posses a bosonic analog of a Fermi surface. Unlike Fermi liquids, however, these systems have no quasiparticles, and exhibit operators whose scaling dimensions can be tuned continuously. The authors suggest that these ideas may be relevant for understanding the non-Fermi-liquid phase of MnSi.
