Infrared study of the interplay of charge, spin, and lattice excitations in the magnetic topological insulator EuIn2As2

Bing Xu, P. Marsik, S. Sarkar, F. Lyzwa, Y. Zhang, B. Shen, and C. Bernhard

Phys. Rev. B 103, 245101 (2021) - Published 1 June, 2021

Using infrared spectroscopy, the authors study here how the low-energy charge carrier dynamics and band structure of the candidate axion topological insulator EuIn2As2 are affected by its antiferromagnetic transition at TN =18 K. The free carriers are shown to have a plasma frequency of about 2000 cm1, and a scattering rate with a cusplike maximum at TN that signifies their strong interaction with the fluctuating Eu spins. The authors also observe large band splittings and a phonon anomaly below TN, which indicate that the charge, spin, and lattice excitations are strongly coupled.

Analytical results for the low-temperature Drude weight of the XXZ spin chain

Andrew Urichuk, Jesko Sirker, and Andreas Klümper

Phys. Rev. B 103, 245108 (2021) - Published 3 June, 2021

Nondecaying dc currents in systems showing ballistic transport are characterized by a constant, known as the Drude weight. Here, the authors obtain analytical results for the spin Drude weight in the interacting anisotropic Heisenberg spin-12 chain at low temperatures. The obtained analytical formula reveals that the Drude weight for any finite temperature exhibits a nowhere-continuous dependence on the spin anisotropy of the model.

Topological correspondence between magnetic space group representations and subdimensions

Adrien Bouhon, Gunnar F. Lange, and Robert-Jan Slager

Phys. Rev. B 103, 245127 (2021) - Published 16 June, 2021

This paper identifies a general class of electronic configurations that in a magnetic background necessarily induce topological structure. The phases additionally feature a correspondence relating antiferromagnetic and ferro/ferrimagnetic realizations. More importantly, the authors find novel types of magnetic topology upon considering this mechanism in all space groups. These phases are exclusively mapped out in this analysis that takes into account planes and lines in the Brillouin zone, prompting a new notion of subdimensional topology that nonetheless has full 3D physical signatures, such as Fermi arcs.

Multipolar topological field theories: Bridging higher order topological insulators and fractons

Yizhi You, F. J. Burnell, and Taylor L. Hughes

Phys. Rev. B 103, 245128 (2021) - Published 16 June, 2021

The concepts of multipolar insulators and multipole symmetries have hinted at tantalizing connections between the disparate fields of higher-order topological insulators and fracton phases. Here, the authors show that these connections are not superficial, but instead arise from a unified field theory description of the topological response of these systems to external fields, similar to the quantized Hall conductance of Chern insulators, and the quantized axion magnetoelectric polarizability in 3D topological insulators. These response theories are built from the recently introduced higher-rank tensor gauge potentials, and can be interpreted, in some scenarios, as the topological response to ordinary electric and magnetic field gradients.

Quasi-four-component method with numeric atom-centered orbitals for relativistic density functional simulations of molecules and solids

Rundong Zhao, Victor Wen-zhe Yu, Kimberly Zhang, Yunlong Xiao, Yong Zhang, and Volker Blum

Phys. Rev. B 103, 245144 (2021) - Published 28 June, 2021

Relativistic effects are essential ingredients of electronic structure based theory and simulation of molecules and solids. The consequences of Dirac’s equation are already measurable in the lightest-element solids (e.g., graphene) and they cannot be neglected in materials containing mid-range or heavy elements. The quasi-four-component method, here implemented and benchmarked across a broad range of systems, seamlessly incorporates all four components of Dirac’s equation in efficient, precise electronic structure based simulations of materials up to large and complex systems.
