Three 6-cell 805 MHz superconducting cavity prototypes for acceleration in the velocity range of about 0.4 to 0.53 times the speed of light have been fabricated and tested. The quality factors ($Q_0$) were between $7\times {10}^9$ and $1.4\times {10}^{10}$ at the design field (accelerating gradient of $8–10\mathrm{MV}/\mathrm{m}$). The maximum gradients reached were between 11 and $16\mathrm{MV}/\mathrm{m}$; in each case, the $Q_0$ values were $\ge 3\times {10}^9$ at the maximum gradient. The design, fabrication, surface preparation, and rf testing of the 6-cell cavities are reported in this paper.

The Fermilab photoinjector produces electron bunches of 1–12 nC charge with an energy of 16–18 MeV. Detailed measurements and optimization of the transverse emittance have been carried out for a number of beam line optics conditions, and at a number of beam line locations. The length of the bunches has also been measured, first for an uncompressed beam (as a function of the charge) and then for a compressed beam of 8 nC charge (as a function of the 9-cell cavity phase). These measurements are presented and compared with the simulation codes HOMDYN and ASTRA.

We present a multimode $X$-band rf pulse compression system suitable for a TeV-scale electron-positron linear collider such as the Next Linear Collider (NLC). The NLC main linac operating frequency is 11.424 GHz. A single NLC rf unit is required to produce 400 ns pulses with 475 MW of peak power. Each rf unit should power approximately 5 m of accelerator structures. The rf unit design consists of two 75 MW klystrons and a dual-moded resonant-delay-line pulse compression system that produces a flat output pulse. The pulse compression system components are all overmoded, and most components are designed to operate with two modes. This approach allows high-power-handling capability while maintaining a compact, inexpensive system. We detail the design of this system and present experimental cold test results. We describe the design and performance of various components. The high-power testing of the system is verified using four 50 MW solenoid-focused klystrons run off a common 400 kV solid-state modulator. The system has produced 400 ns rf pulses of greater than 500 MW. We present the layout of our system, which includes a dual-moded transmission waveguide system and a dual-moded resonant line (SLED-II) pulse compression system. We also present data on the processing and operation of this system, which has set high-power records in coherent and phase controlled pulsed rf.

The Yee finite-difference time domain method (FDTD) is commonly used in wake field and particle-in-cell simulations. However, in accelerator modeling the high energy particles can travel in vacuum faster than their own radiation. This effect is commonly referred to as numerical Cherenkov radiation and is a consequence of numerical grid dispersion. Several numerical approaches are proposed to reduce the dispersion for all angles and for a given frequency range, that justifies itself for domains big in all three directions. On the contrary, in accelerator modeling the transverse dimensions and transverse beam velocity are small, but it is extremely important to eliminate the dispersion error in the well-defined direction of the beam motion for all frequencies. In this paper we propose a new two-level economical conservative scheme for electromagnetic field calculations in three dimensions. The scheme does not have dispersion in the longitudinal direction and is staircase-free (second order convergent). Unlike the FDTD method, it is based on a “transversal-electric/transversal-magnetic” (TE/TM)-like splitting of the field components in time. The scheme assures energy and charge conservation. Additionally, the usage of damping terms allows suppressing high frequency noise generated due to the transverse dispersion and the current fluctuations. The dispersion relation of the damping scheme is analyzed. As numerical examples show, the new scheme is much more accurate on the long-time scale than the conventional FDTD approach.

This paper presents a method for compensating the vertical orbit change through the interaction region that arises when the beam enters the linear collider detector solenoid at a crossing angle. Such compensation is required because any deviation of the vertical orbit causes degradation of the beam size due to synchrotron radiation, and also because the nonzero total vertical angle causes rotation of the polarization vector of the bunch. Compensation is necessary to preserve the luminosity or to guarantee knowledge of the polarization at the interaction point. The most effective compensation is done locally with a special dipole coil arrangement incorporated into the detector (detector integrated dipole). The compensation is effective for both $e^{+}{e}^{-}$and $e^{-}{e}^{-}$beams, and the technique is compatible with transverse-coupling compensation either by the standard method, using skew quadrupoles, or by a more effective method using weak antisolenoids.

Closed analytical formulas describing the parameters of x rays, generated in Compton backscattering of laser pulse and electron beam, such as total yield and temporal duration of the x-ray pulse are presented. Despite the fact that maximal yield is attainable at the head-on collisions and the analytical expressions for this specific case were derived, for some technological reasons in the Compton sources, the head-on collision is not acceptable. In “laser wire” monitors the laser beam crosses the electron bunch at the right angle. A model comprising the ellipsoidal laser and electron bunches with tri-Gaussian density distribution is considered. For this model, the total yield of x-ray quanta and temporal duration is derived as functions of the (arbitrary) crossing angle and geometric dimensions of both the bunch and the pulse. As is shown, the yield is maximal for the head-on collision. With increase in the collision angle, the yield diminishes with rate determined by dimensions of the bunches. Duration of the x-ray pulse behaves in a similar way; minimal duration is attained near the back-on collisions.

We have conducted a multiobjective computational optimization of a high brightness, high average current photoinjector under development at Cornell University. This injector employs a dc photoemission electron gun. Using evolutionary algorithms combined with parallel computing resources, the multivariate parameter space of the photoinjector was explored for optimal values. This powerful computational tool allows an extensive study of complex and nonlinear systems such as the space-charge dominated regions of an accelerator, and has broad areas of potential application to accelerator physics and engineering problems. In the present case, the optimized injector is simulated to deliver beam of very high quality (e.g., a rms normalized emittance of 0.1 mm mrad for 0.1 nC, and 0.7 mm mrad for 1 nC bunches). The field strengths of the active elements of the injector are moderate and technically practical. The relevance of these results to various novel linac-based accelerator proposals is pointed out.

We present a novel method of combining the most desirable characteristics of thermionic-cathode and photocathode rf guns, using a field-emission cathode and multiple rf frequencies. Simulations indicate that extremely low-emittance beams (on the order of 2 nm normalized emittance) at moderate beam currents (1 mA) and beam energies of $\sim 2\mathrm{MeV}$ can be obtained using this technique. The resulting gun design promises to be useful as a driver source for a number of applications, including high-voltage electron microscopy, precision electron-beam welding, and long-wavelength (THz) radiation generation; we include performance calculations for the electron microscopy and precision welding applications.

We calculate the optimum energy efficiency of a laser-driven linear accelerator by adopting a simple linear model. In the case of single bunch operation, the energy efficiency can be enhanced by incorporating the accelerator into a cavity that is pumped by an external laser. In the case of multiple bunch operation, the intracavity configuration is less advantageous because the strong wakefield generated by the electron beam is also recycled. Finally, the calculation indicates that the luminosity of a linear collider based on such a structure is comparably small if high efficiency is desired.

The interplay of nonlinear rf fields and space charge is studied using a particle simulation code together with analytic derivations. In the framework of the elliptic (“Hofmann-Pedersen”) distribution function the matched beam parameters are obtained. Using the simulation “Schottky” noise from matched bunches the coherent mode spectrum is analyzed and compared with analytic expression. The bunch response to a small rf phase modulation is studied over a large range of initial simulation parameters (modulation frequency, bunch intensity). These bunch response scans clearly show the location of the dipole mode frequency as well as the threshold for the loss of Landau damping due to space charge. In addition, bunch stability scans are performed in order to determine the stability boundaries for flattopped bunches in single and double rf wave forms. The results are related to previous work on beam transfer functions in single and double rf buckets and to experimental observations in the GSI synchrotron SIS.

Betatron coupling is usually analyzed using either matrix formalism or Hamiltonian perturbation theory. The latter is less exact but provides a better physical insight. In this paper direct relations are derived between the two formalisms. This makes it possible to interpret the matrix approach in terms of resonances, as well as use results of both formalisms indistinctly. An approach to measure the complete coupling matrix and its determinant from turn-by-turn data is presented. Simulations using methodical accelerator design MAD-X, an accelerator design and tracking program, were performed to validate the relations and understand the scope of their application to real accelerators such as the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.

During the last decades, photocathode rf guns have been proven to be successful for providing very high quality electron beams required for vacuum ultraviolet and x-ray free-electron lasers. Beam dynamics simulations show that the electron beam quality in a rf gun depends strongly on the beam dynamics in the vicinity of the cathode. Therefore, the injection process plays a significant role in the beam performance. Several codes are available to simulate the beam dynamics in the gun. They are able to track the beam under the influence of external fields and space charge forces, but details of the emission processes are still missing in these simulations. In photocathode rf guns, the electron beams have a high charge density. Especially during emission from the cathode, the electrons have a very low velocity and experience high longitudinal space charge forces counteracting the applied accelerating field. Because of the space charge field, some part of the electrons emitted from the cathode might move backward to the cathode where they can produce secondary electrons. A high electric field in the gun cavity, on the other hand, generates a large amount of dark current. If the field-emitted electrons from the cathode or any other surface inside the cavity hit the cathode, secondary electrons can be produced as well. For a detailed understanding of the electron beam and dark current in a rf gun, simulations including a model of the secondary electron emission are necessary. In this paper, a simple model is discussed with an application to the beam dynamics at high emission phases in rf guns. Detailed simulations have been done in comparison to measurements at the Photo Injector Test Facility at DESY in Zeuthen. The primary electrons which are photoemitted from the cathode and the secondary electrons which are produced by the primaries at the cathode could be clearly distinguished in measurements and simulations.

A formulation for the characterization of superradiant and stimulated-superradiant radiative emission from bunched electron beams is presented. The radiation is characterized in terms of power and spectral power per radiation mode, which provide a measure of the useful spatially coherent radiation power and spectral power emitted by a radiation source. When the bunched electron beam emits superradiantly, these parameters scale like the square of the number of electrons, orders of magnitude more than spontaneous emission. The formulation applies to emission from single bunches, a finite number of bunches in a macropulse, or periodic bunching. It can be employed on any kind of $e$-beam radiation scheme. Specific analytic expressions are derived for coherent synchrotron radiation and prebunched free-electron laser, providing a basis for comparing and understanding their connection.

Further enhancement of the intense coherent superradiant and stimulated-superradiant emission from prebunched electron beams is possible, in schemes of prebunched beam radiation devices, and particularly free electron laser (FEL). The enhancement of coherent power and spectral power by use of a waveguide, particularly at the zero-slippage condition, is evaluated. A special scheme of a stimulated-superradiance FEL oscillator is analyzed and is shown to feature ultimate radiative energy conversion efficiency (near 100%).

In this paper, we discuss the optics effects of the realistic detector solenoid field on beam size at the interaction point (IP) of a future linear collider and their compensation. It is shown that most of the adverse effects on the IP beam size arise only from the part of the solenoid field which overlaps and extends beyond the final focusing quadrupoles. It is demonstrated that the most efficient and local compensation can be achieved using the novel method of weak antisolenoids near the IP, while a correction scheme which employs only skew quadrupoles is less efficient, and compensation with strong antisolenoids is not appropriate. One of the advantages of the proposed antisolenoid scheme is that this compensation works well over a large range of the beam energy.

Recently, resonance driving terms were successfully measured in the CERN SPS and the BNL RHIC from the Fourier spectrum of beam position monitor (BPM) data. Based on these measurements a new analysis has been derived to extract truly local observables from BPM data. These local observables are called local resonance terms since they share some similarities with the global resonance terms. In this paper we derive these local terms analytically and present experimental measurements of sextupolar global and local resonance terms in RHIC. Nondestructive measurements of these terms using ac dipoles are also presented.

The High Current Experiment at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is part of the U.S. program to explore heavy-ion beam transport at a scale representative of the low-energy end of an induction linac driver for fusion energy production. The primary mission of this experiment is to investigate aperture fill factors acceptable for the transport of space-charge-dominated heavy-ion beams at high intensity (line charge density $\sim 0.2\mu \mathrm{C}/\mathrm{m}$) over long pulse durations ($4\mu \mathrm{s}$) in alternating gradient focusing lattices of electrostatic or magnetic quadrupoles. This experiment is testing transport issues resulting from nonlinear space-charge effects and collective modes, beam centroid alignment and steering, envelope matching, image charges and focusing field nonlinearities, halo, and electron and gas cloud effects. We present the results for a coasting 1 MeV ${\mathrm{K}}^{+}$ ion beam transported through ten electrostatic quadrupoles. The measurements cover two different fill factor studies (60% and 80% of the clear aperture radius) for which the transverse phase space of the beam was characterized in detail, along with beam energy measurements and the first halo measurements. Electrostatic quadrupole transport at high beam fill factor ($\approx 80\%$) is achieved with acceptable emittance growth and beam loss, even though the initial beam distribution is not ideal (but the emittance is low) nor in thermal equilibrium. We achieved good envelope control, and rematching may only be needed every ten lattice periods (at 80% fill factor) in a longer lattice of similar design. We also show that understanding and controlling the time dependence of the envelope parameters is critical to achieving high fill factors, notably because of the injector and matching section dynamics.

The electron cloud effect has been studied by means of detailed simulation codes that typically track the particles' evolution under the influence of the corresponding electromagnetic forces and fields. In this paper we show that, for the RHIC case, the electron cloud can be treated from an abstract point of view as a bunch to bunch evolution using simple maps. Secondly, we show how this treatment yields a useful conclusion, which is otherwise difficult to obtain: for a fixed number of bunches and total beam current in RHIC, it is possible to determine the best way to distribute the bunch pattern around the ring to minimize the electron cloud formation. This application is an example of how maps become a useful tool for exploring the electron cloud evolution in parameter space.

A formalism presented in a previous paper for the analysis of cumulative beam breakup (BBU) with arbitrary time dependence of the beam current and with misalignment of the cavities and focusing elements [J. R. Delayen, Phys. Rev. ST Accel. Beams 6, 084402 (2003)] is extended to include time dependence of the focusing and coupling between the beam and the dipole modes. Such time dependence, which could result from an energy chirp imposed on the beam or from rf focusing, is known to be effective in reducing BBU-induced instabilities and emittance growth. The analytical results are presented and applied to practical accelerator configurations and compared to numerical simulations.

ac dipoles in accelerators are used to excite coherent betatron oscillations at a drive frequency close to the tune. If the excitation amplitude is slowly increased to the desired value and slowly decreased back to zero there is no significant emittance growth. The aim of this article is to study the adiabaticity of the ramping process of an ac dipole as a function of the different parameters involved.
