Frank Zimmermann, Chief Editor

Frank Zimmermann

Frank Zimmermann is a senior scientist with the CERN Beams Department and the deputy leader of the Future Circular Collider study. Starting with HERA and early LHC design, Frank worked on a large number of colliders, including SLC, NLC design, PEP-II, KEKB, Tevatron, and LHC commissioning. He co-proposed and co-designed various future colliders, including the LHC luminosity upgrade, the LHeC, SAPPHiRE, HE-LHC, LEP3, FCC-ee, and FCC-hh. While doing so, he made pioneering contributions on ion-driven beam instabilities and electron-cloud effects. Prior to CERN, Frank worked at SLAC (1993-98) and at DESY (1990-93). In 1997, he was awarded a SLAC “Panofsky fellowship.” In 2002, he received the biannual EPS-IGA prize for outstanding work in accelerator physics, in 2019, the USPAS Prize for achievement in accelerator physics and technology, and in 2023 the Fermi Prize of the Italian Physical Society. Since 2004, he is a Fellow of the APS and since 2015, a senior member of the IEEE. Frank is author or co-author of more than 800 articles in journals or conference proceedings. Together with Dr. Michiko Minty, he wrote a textbook on beam control and manipulation, published by Springer in 2003. He has also been one of four editors for the second and third editions of the Handbook of Accelerator Physics and Engineering, published by World Scientific in 2013 and 2023, respectively. In 2022, he chaired the APS Division of Physics of Beams (APS-DPB).

Brad Rubin

Brad received a B.S. from the University of Maryland in College Park and a Ph.D. in physics from Columbia University in 1990 (high-energy physics). He subsequently held research positions at NASA in Huntsville, Alabama and the Riken Institute in Japan. He is also a Managing Editor for Physical Review Fluids and a member of the editorial teams for Physical Review B and Physical Review C.

Sara Casalbuoni

Sara Casalbuoni, Associate Editor

European X-Ray Free Electron Laser (EuXFEL), Germany

Sara Casalbuoni presently is the Head of the Undulator Systems Group at the European X-Ray Free Electron Laser (EuXFEL) in Germany. Previously, leading the Insertion Devices Group at the KIT synchrotron, she steered the R&D program on superconducting undulators (SCUs), which are now commercially available from an industrial partner, Bilfinger Noell GmbH. At KIT, Sara also contributed to the design of the Future Circular Collider. Prior to KIT, she worked on electron bunch diagnostics at DESY, and on superconducting radio-frequency cavities at the University of Hamburg. Sara studied physics at the University of Firenze in Italy and received her Ph.D. from the University of Bern in Switzerland.Sara is, and has been, a member of several accelerator review and advisory committees, and has served on organizing committees for various workshops and IPAC conferences. She is a board member of the photon sources group of the League of European Accelerator-based Photon Sources (LEAPS). At present, she is elected Member-at-Large of the APS Division of Physics of Beams (01/23–12/25). From 2017 to 2021, she served on the Editorial Board of Physical Review Accelerators and Beams. Sara is one of the 2023 Outstanding Referees of the Physical Review journals.

Sergey Belomestnykh

Sergey Belomestnykh, Associate Editor

Sergey Belomestnykh is a Senior Scientist and Director of the Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) Technology and Materials Science Division at Fermilab. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Stony Brook University. Previously, he served as Fermilab’s Chief Technology Officer. Sergey graduated with an M.S. degree from Novosibirsk State Technical University and then received his Ph.D. degree from Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics in Novosibirsk, Russia. He joined Cornell University’s Laboratory for Elementary Particle Physics in 1994 and in 2010 moved to Brookhaven National Laboratory, where he was an SRF group leader overseeing development of several new SRF and RF systems. He has been at Fermilab since 2015. He has co-authored a monograph on the multipactor effect in accelerating cavities and contributed chapters to handbooks. Sergey Belomestnykh is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, Senior Member of IEEE, and recipient of the 2015 IEEE NPSS Particle Accelerator Science and Technology Award “for achievements in the science and technology of RF and SRF for particle accelerators.”

Chao Feng

Chao Feng, Associate Editor

Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, China

Chao Feng is the Deputy Director of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) Science Center at the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, CAS, and Head of Operations for the Shanghai Soft X-ray FEL facility. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013. His research focuses on accelerator physics and the development of advanced light sources, specializing in free-electron lasers. Dr. Feng's honors include the China Youth Science and Technology Award (2024), the Young Investigator FEL Prize (2019), and the CAS Youth Scientist Award (2023).

Wolfram Fischer

Wolfram Fischer, Associate Editor

Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA

Wolfram Fischer is the Deputy Associate Laboratory Director for Accelerators in Nuclear and Particle Physics and Chair of the Collider-Accelerator Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Hamburg in 1995 with experimental accelerator physics work at CERN and DESY, and he joined Brookhaven in the same year. He moved through the ranks to his present position in 2021. Wolfram is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and a Senior Member of IEEE. He received the APS Outstanding Referee Award in 2016 and the Brookhaven Science and Technology Award in 2017. His research interests are collider-related problems and accelerator applications.

Alexander Scheinker

Alexander Scheinker, Associate Editor,

Alexander Scheinker is the Adaptive Machine Learning Team Leader at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He received M.S. degrees in math and physics and a Ph.D. in adaptive feedback control theory from UCSD in 2012. He is a research affiliate at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, an IEEE Control Systems Society Conference Editorial Board Associate Editor, and a Senior Member of IEEE. He has been developing novel adaptive feedback controllers and robust adaptive generative AI tools for time-varying systems that incorporate online physics models, feedback control, and physics constraints within generative AI architectures to enable them to extrapolate beyond training data for complex dynamic systems such as charged particle beams and 3D dynamic imaging. His adaptive and AI-based algorithms for autonomous accelerator tuning have been used at the European XFEL at DESY, the LCLS, SPEAR-3, and FACET-I/II at SLAC, HiRES and NDCX-II at LBNL, LANSCE and DARHT at LANL, and AWAKE at CERN.

Maria Poko

Maria Poko, Assistant Editor

Maria started her career with the APS in 1989 as a correspondent of a training manual and went on to be an editorial support coordinator and an editorial assistant. She joined the PRD editorial team in 2006 and later joined the editorial teams of PRAB and PRPER.
