Using graphene conductors to enhance the functionality of atom chips

K. Wongcharoenbhorn, R. Crawford, N. Welch, F. Wang, G. Sinuco-León, P. Krüger, F. Intravaia, C. Koller, and T. M. Fromhold

Phys. Rev. A 104, 053108 (2021) - Published 16 November, 2021

The authors theoretically analyze the performance and functionality of atom chips. The results show that graphene-based van der Waals heterostructures result in a much longer lifetime of the trapped atom cloud and a much smaller atom-surface separation than the chips based on current-carrying wires.

Phys. Rev. A 104, 052224 (2021) - Published 29 November, 2021

Objective collapse theories attempt to respond to the quantum measurement problem by making slight amendments to Schrödinger’s equation. Here, the authors show that in order for such a theory to reproduce the experimentally observed probabilities for finding any particular outcome, its time evolution can be neither linear nor unitary.

Evaluating the advantage of adaptive strategies for quantum channel distinguishability

Vishal Katariya and Mark M. Wilde

Phys. Rev. A 104, 052406 (2021) - Published 8 November, 2021

Quantum strategies are a generalization of quantum channels, allowing for multiple interactions over multiple rounds. Here, the authors expand the resource theory of asymmetric distinguishability to quantum strategies. They find that adaptive, sequential strategies may offer an advantage over parallel ones in the discrimination of amplitude damping channels.

Entropy production and the role of correlations in quantum Brownian motion

Alessandra Colla and Heinz-Peter Breuer

Phys. Rev. A 104, 052408 (2021) - Published 10 November, 2021

The authors add a driving force to a quantum dissipative model and investigate its effect on entropy production and correlations. Notably, it renders two common definitions of entropy production incompatible in the weak-coupling limit.

Dephasing superchannels

Zbigniew Puchała, Kamil Korzekwa, Roberto Salazar, Paweł Horodecki, and Karol Życzkowski

Phys. Rev. A 104, 052611 (2021) - Published 19 November, 2021

The authors introduce dephasing superchannels, which describe environmental noises that act only on the quantum properties of a gate and leave the classical parts untouched. They develop a formalism to explore various properties of these superchannels, such as the effects they have on channel coherence, and propose a physical realization based on pre- and postprocessing operations with memory.

Quantum gates robust to secular amplitude drifts

Qile David Su, Robijn Bruinsma, and Wesley C. Campbell

Phys. Rev. A 104, 052625 (2021) - Published 30 November, 2021

The robustness of quantum gates in the presence of imperfections in the classical control fields that drive the gates is an important issue in quantum computation. The authors extend the technique of composite pulses and construct two pulse sequences that provide robustness against time-dependent drift in the amplitude of the control pulses.

Trichromatic shaper-based quantum state holography

K. Eickhoff, L. Feld, D. Köhnke, T. Bayer, and M. Wollenhaupt

Phys. Rev. A 104, 052805 (2021) - Published 5 November, 2021

Phases play an important role in ultrafast dynamics. In this paper, the authors present an ultrafast quantum state holography scheme based on the interference of photoelectron wave packets from multiphoton ionization using shaper-generated trichromatic pump-probe-reference pulse sequences. Independent control of the phase, the time delay, and the central wavelength of all three sub-pulses are demonstrated in a proof-of-concept experiment on the multiphoton ionization of potassium atoms.

Importance of one- and two-photon transitions in the strong-field dissociation of NO2+

Bethany Jochim, M. Zohrabi, B. Gaire, Tereza Uhlíková, K. D. Carnes, E. Wells, B. D. Esry, and I. Ben-Itzhak

Phys. Rev. A 104, 053112 (2021) - Published 18 November, 2021

The authors report on a study of the femtosecond laser-induced dissociation of the metastable dication NO2+ into N+ + O+ using coincidence three-dimensional momentum imaging. Their analysis shows the dominant role of the lowest electronic states in the molecular excitation, and the fact that dissociation dominates over ionization by two orders of magnitude.

Weak localization of light in hot atomic vapors

N. Cherroret, M. Hemmerling, G. Labeyrie, D. Delande, J. T. M. Walraven, and R. Kaiser

Phys. Rev. A 104, 053714 (2021) - Published 18 November, 2021

According to conventional wisdom, the fast thermal motion of atoms in hot atomic vapor should destroy any measurable effects of coherent backscattering. The authors show that, with the right choice of laser detuning and cell geometry, the experimental detection of coherent backscattering in hot vapor may actually be within reach.

In this work, the authors present a protocol for avoiding such probability loss.

They develop a formalism to explore various properties of these superchannels, such as the effects they have on channel coherence, and propose a physical realization based on pre- and postprocessing operations with memory.

The robustness of quantum gates in the presence of imperfections in the classical control fields that drive the gates is an important issue in quantum computation. The authors extend the technique of composite pulses and construct two pulse sequences that provide robustness against time-dependent drift in the amplitude of the control pulses.

Their analysis shows the dominant role of the lowest electronic states in the molecular excitation, and the fact that dissociation dominates over ionization by two orders of magnitude.
